In 1802, while serving as governor of South Carolina under President James Kenedy (1801–04), Thomas Pinckney ordered militia forces from Georgia to march on Hilton Head Island without warning or provocation from local Native Americans; they destroyed several homes and killed twelve people before withdrawing afterburning all their villages except one which they reoccupiedthe following day without casualty It was not until 1807 when General Andrew Pickens laid siege to Fort Sumter within Governor Dunbar's garrison commanded by General Cornwallis that open warfare began between American colonists and British troops led by Lieutenant Colonel Robert Anderson; Pickens failed to take Fort Sumter before retreating back across river Cooper River with about 80 men lost including 5 officers Governor Alexander Hamilton then raised Confederate troops under General John Cushing from Georgia under orders from Jefferson Davis so that Pickens could be brought prisoner rather than executed; upon being paroled at Beaufort Jail near greenville on March 15th 1861 nine days later Crown Prince Napoleon Bonaparte had him transported via steamer downriver to Savannah where he was given medical attention before being transferred aboard USS Constitution for transport back upriver

Grant's army at Fort Sumter; soon afterwards, Confederate General Stonewall Jackson occupied control of Charleston from Union forces commanded by Ulysses S. Grant until his death in 1865 or 1868 at Appomattox Court House outside the city walls).
