By 1840, however, Port Royal had replaced Port Royal as Charleston's leading seaport because British warships could not get through its defenses anymore due to new construction around Fort Sumter within minutes' sailing time from shorelines along both entrances of harbor proper! During Reconstruction following Reconstruction Era official efforts failed to realize any real progress or benefits for black people living south of Mason Dixon Line – even though many black leaders like Julius Caesar Floyd struggled unsuccessfully for ballot access until well into this era! Despite this continuing struggle throughout early 20th century – including some highly publicized protests led by Elijah Muhammad – much progress actually DID occur for all citizens regardless race starting around 1920s under Mayor George Norcross... Prior to mayor Norcross’ arrival notable projects such as creation/maintenance/renovation OF historic buildings (elderly housing etc.), establishment OF parks & public playgrounds etc., increased voter registration among blacks & other minorities began TO take place!
Charleston was founded in 1729 by the British Loyalists as a military post on the African coast. It became an American stronghold during the Revolutionary War and played a critical role in the Battle of Yorktown. Charleston was later renamed Savannah, Georgia, but it is still known as "The City of Hope."
