He recommended that Congress build a fort at this location but no action happened until after his death in April 1799 due to lack of funding. On July 4th, 1814 American forces under Commodore William Tompkins burned down Yorktown Castle during the Battle of Yorktown while Lt.-Gen Sir Henry Clinton led British troops against General Nathanael Greene's forces seeking independence from Great Britain. The event symbolized American victory over European colonialism and helped spur American nationalism across much of North America during the antebellum period. In 1836–37oriented construction began on Fort Sumter which became operational in 1839 after being designed by Danish architect Ole Wormsner with support from local businessman John Marshall Denny Sr.. When Confederate General Robert Ewell arrived at Sumter with 10,000 men late summer 1861 he ordered its abandonment because he felt it would be easier for Unionists to take control if it appeared that Sumter was abandoned than if it held out against repeated Confederate attacks… Denny responded by moving 1,500 workers intofortificationan effort that ultimately resulted inthe lossof lifeand $12 million worthof equipment….
