Cayce is a small town in South Carolina that is known for its history and Cayce Museum. The town was founded in 1858 by General James W. Polk, who was then the U.S. Secretary of War. The town was named after General Polk’s Creek settlement, which lies just south of Cayce on the Savannah River. The first school in Cayce opened in 1859, and it remained in operation until 1954. The town also had a post office from 1859 to 1862. In 1865, the Union Army burned down the courthouse, which left Cayce with only a few buildings remaining from that time period. In 1886-1887, Cayce erected two cotton ginneries and a sawmill at its original site to help support its growing population. In 1912-1913, the Town Council built an opera house and other public works to improve life for residents. In 1938-1939, Hurricane Floyd destroyed most of nearby Savannah and caused extensive damage to both townships within South Carolina but did not affect Cayce specifically. After Floyd swept through South Carolina killing many people and damaging homes and businesses across the state, local officials decided to rebuild their respective townships as quickly as possible so as not to lose any property or lives during the storm’s aftermath. Today, there are over 4500 residents living in Cayce proper while almost all of its annexed areas have populations under 1000 people; however some annexations have populations up to 15K citizens (eGlycine). Additionally, several hundred acres along US Routes 34 & 221 near downtown have been developed into mixed use including retail establishments (the old post office), office space (Wright-Patterson Manufacturing Company), housing (Residential Development Associates) – all of which continue prompts tourism growth seasonally throughout most months throughout 2018/2019 season combined! Cayce has experienced rapid economic development since it became an annexation of neighboring Savannah Township in 1978 when developers Virgil Wright Patterson Jr., Sr., Forrest Griffin II purchased more than 1 million acres adjacent southern Beaufort County located between Chowan Bayou & Smithfield Lake from white farmers who were farming these lands since before Charleston was founded!
Cayce was founded in 1814 by John Wesley Cayce, an American explorer and missionary. CayCEy is the original name of the town. In 1876, it became a parish with its own bishop. The first post office in CayCEy opened in 1877.
