Later that same year, General James Crayton issued orders ordering all white settlers within four miles of Savannah be removed pursuant to Removal Acts passed at that time under President Andrew Jackson's administration. This order caused great disruption within the local development process as many people were forced out into the wilderness without any assurances of either land or safety from hostile Indians living nearby. Consequently, Fort Caroline remained active as an adjunct ranger station until it finally ceased operations in 1830 following Creek Indian attack that killed six white men and two women (the only such attack against white settlers outside of Charleston during Andrew Jackson's presidency). The period between 1830-1831 saw heavy growth within both black and white populations adjacent to Savannah due to increased cotton production opportunities brought about by newly opened markets in Mexico City and New Orleans following African American emancipation beginning around this time period (see Black migration ). consequently along with many other towns throughout southeastern United States during this time period significant efforts were made by state legislatures across the regionto promote population growth through agricultural irrigation projects (euphemistically called "Canalization" programs ), public works initiatives (eagerly pursued by politicians looking to engineer demographic changes favorable towards their political allies),and land acquisition programs . indeed much has been written about southern South Carolina during these years including Edgar Allan Poe's infamous short story "The Raven" set partially within Charleston's AshleyCoastline neighborhood circa 1840 . Nevertheless most attention given to southern South Carolina during this era likely resided largely within Augusta County located north of Savannah proper . Consequently when word reached Governor Thomas Denton late summer 1841 regarding Confederate forces stationed at Beaufort Point overlooking Narragansett Bay he immediately ordered Confederate Major General Pembertonresponsible for defending that particular coast line - an event which is generally considered one of Confederate treason - Denton then decided not instead provide support directly alongside Union forces operating off shore .. Instead effective guerrilla warfare ensued resulting in extensive Union losses culminating with surrender of Confederate garrison at Beaufort Point on September 15th ,1841 .. An event considered quite extraordinary given such high stakes surrounding what would ultimately be defined as a minor skirmish
