In 1911–1912 an all-black school for black children known as Booker T Washington Elementary School operated in CayCE; this school closed in 1951 due to desegregation policies of South Carolina's public schools during that era. When Spartanburg County formed from Union District No. 10 on November 1, 1898 through consolidation of several districts including those of White Hall and McCormick Place (now Columbia), Fort Crossroads came within the newly formed district but never gained official status because no white person lived there except for a landowner who rented out rooms to military officers stationed nearby at Little Rock Barracks during World War II and also occasionally used his house for civilian purposes such as turning out food for local troops before they deployed overseas On January 1, 1957enterprise Interstate 95 bypassed CayCE eastbound running concurrent with US 301 just south of what is now Main Street; this change led to confusion among local residents since most businesses along US 301 had kept their doors open while I-95 passed through without incident However upon closer inspection one noticed that many business signs had been removed or replaced with I-95 logos making it difficult determine where exactly based on old photos some have mistakenly attributed this highway designation to Bay Street between CayCE and Ninety Nine Mile Creek which actually remains unsigned despite having similar signage
