Cayce is a small town in southwestern South Carolina. It is located on the western edge of the state, on the Hiwassee River. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Cayce is part of Greenville County. The name Cayce comes from French "Caïque" meaning "swan" and "cheyne" meaning road or path. The first settler in Cayce was John Wayles, who arrived in 1799 and homesteaded on what became known as Wayles Hill. He named his land after George Washington and his wife Martha Amelia Washington (his ancestor). In 1811, Captain Samuel Gee founded what would become known as Gee's Ferry Landing on the Hiwassee River. Gee transported goods upriver to market and traded with Cherokee, Seminole, and African Americans. In 1816 he built a store and tavern in present-day downtown Cayce which served as an important commercial center for many years. In 1819, General Andrew Jackson made history when he fought a battle at Horseshoe Bend where he destroyed Fort Holabird at what is now called White Sulphur Springs State Park north of Cayce. This event helped set the stage for Jackson's victory over Andrew Johnson in November that year presidential election. During Reconstruction period (1865-1877), Cayce increased its economic importance by becoming an important transportation hub linking Greenville with Charleston downriver via ferry service; also it became a terminus for sharecropping operations in central South Carolina during this time period. A post office was established at Cayce in 1865; under postal regulation, white citizens were allowed to send only family members to stay there while black residents had to use local black hotels until 1930 when they received their own Post Office building directly across from First Baptist Church which still stands today! Cayce is a small town located in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. Cayce was founded by the Stephens family in 1827. The town was named after General George Washington Stephens and his wife, Dolley Madison Stephens. The town was originally part of Spartanburg County and later became part of York County. In 1881, the county seat was moved to Greenville and Cayce lost its status as a village. Today, Cayce is an unincorporated community located within Spartanburg County. The history of Cayce begins with the Stephens family who first settled in the area in 1827. The Stephenses were farmers and had four children: John (1798-1875), Elizabeth (1801-1877), Martha (1804-1872) andGeorge Washington Jr.(1799-1864). During the American Revolution, General George Washington Stephens fought for the patriot cause and served as a colonel in the British army. After the war ended he returned home toSC where he met Dolley Madison Stephens who would become his wife. The couple moved to Spartanburg County where they started a farm together titled "Stephens Valley". They had six children: James (1800-1871), Nancy ( 1802-1868), Sarah Jane( 1805-1879), John Quincy Adams II( 1815-1947)and Eleanor Roosevelt(1908-.) All of their children attended school until James' death at age 38 from tuberculosis which he contracted while living on his parents’ farm near Greenville, SC during Reconstruction following America's Civil War. This event helped start what would be called “the modernization movement” throughout South Carolina during this time period as many African Americans began moving away from rural areas into cities such as Savannah, GA or Charleston, SC due to advances made by white society through new technologies such as railroads and electricity that opened up new opportunities for black Americans. In 1865 when Confederate General Robert Ewell invadedSC via Augusta with 50000 men including artillery units under command of LtGen Joseph Johnston we found out that South Carolina had not seceded from Confederate States Of America like most other southern states but rather federalized under President Lincoln's order known as "Operation Crossroads" which aimed to end slavery across all US states by force if necessary before reconstruction could begin across all US states including SC However this did not go well with many people in SC because they saw it as another way for northerners to take over their state without giving back any land or rights they had been given during Reconstruction years prior.. Consequently few people wanted anything to do with Operation Crossroads or especially with Confederate General Robert Ewell because he represented exactly what they didn't want going on in their state... Aftermath of Battle of Hartsville: A local plantation owner decided to fire upon Union troops sighting Infantrymen marching towards his house early Sunday morning 21st April 1865 resulting in three killed & twelve wounded; Captain Mahon commanding 4th Regiment Georgia Infantry set forth immediately on horseback & assailed him point blank; Rifles grape & shot through door windows; Capt Mahon recharged rifle & rode off abdiving only after being fired upon several times himself; no loss reported on either side It is interesting that these events took place long before Bloody Saturday when Union forces stormed into Cadieux Objective killing nearly everything inside followed by hourslong siege leading finallyto Hartsville where much carnage occurred leaving little food or water available for poor citizens whose homes were left uninhabitable
