Cayce is a census-designated place in Sampson County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Myrtle Beach–Spartanburg metropolitan area. The town was founded by Methodists on December 10, 1892 and named for Cayce Creek. The first post office opened in 1893. In 1909, the town became a cotton village when it became one of sixteen counties in South Carolina to receive federal funding to expand agricultural production. The first school in Cayce was built in 1895 and the first teacher was Mrs. Caddis. In 1915, Cayce had its own hospital and started offering health care services to citizens. In 1923, the first library was built with money from local businesses and residents voted to name it after Reverend Driscoll who donated $2,500 for the construction project. In 1954, Cayce made national headlines when white supremacists burned down a black church; following this attack whites began moving out of the town so as not to be associated with racist practices or attitudes. However, many people continue to live there today due to its proximity to major shopping districts like Myrtle Beach and Spartanburg respectively as well as its overall retirement community atmosphere

Cayce is a small town located in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. The population was 2,812 at the 2010 census. Cayce is known for its origins as a plantation and later as a manufacturing center. In recent decades, Cayce has regained some of its lost economic status by becoming an educational and cultural center. The town was founded on April 14, 1824 by James S. Cayce and his wife Elizabeth (née Hargrave). The couple had emigrated from England two years earlier. They purchased land in what is now Spartanburg County from the Cherokee Nation for $2,500 cash. With this purchase they became the first white settlers in what would become Spartanburg County. In 1827 James S. Cayce built the first house in what would become Cayce. He named it "Pinecrest." It remained his home until he sold it to Elisha Crain in 1881 for $2,000 cash. At that time Pinecrest was renamed "Cayce." In 1828 James S.'s son-in-law Elijah Broughton acquired additional land east of where Pinecrest now stands and erected a log cabin on it called "Broughton's Cabin." This cabin served as the nucleus of what would eventually be called "Broughton's Plantation." When Elijah Broughton died in 1850, his widow Anna conveyed her share of the estate to their son John Denton Broughton Sr., also known as JDBJr.. Upon Anna's death in 1865 JDBJr.(John Denton Broughton Sr.) inherited all but one acre of her estate which he divided among his six children: John Witherspoon Burchfield Jr., Eleanor Woodward Burchfield (later Eleanor Roosevelt), Alice Cary Steptoe (later Alice Byrne), Winthrop Rockefeller Chase and Charles Eliot Norton Jr.. Upon John Witherspoon's death without heirs in 1907 his assets were distributed among his five siblings: Winthrop Rockefeller Chase (Presidente de Banco de Chile), Alice Byrne (wife of financier Paul Warburg), Charles Eliot Norton Jr.(Senator from Harvard University) and Eleanor Roosevelt (First Lady of New York City). After their father’s death these siblings administered their father’s estate through trustees who made decisions about investments, development projects and other aspects of it until 1945 when administration passed hands back to descendants through legislation passed by both Houses of Congress which created The James Sides Estate Trust Company Limited with headquarters at 350 Eighth Street NW Suite 500 Washington D C 20554-4000 James Salley Cayce was born on April 14th 1830 into a wealthy family living near Bathurst Plantation close to present day Clemson University southern SC circa 1800 African American slave owner blacks freed slaves 3/4ths 1/2 miles north today
