Cayce was founded on November 12, 1831 by General James K. Polk and his wife Julia Comstock Polk. It is now a city in the United States of America. Cayce was named for Major-General J.K. Cayce who fought in the American Civil War and died at Appomattox Court House on April 14, 1865. The town was originally part of Clay County but was organized as a city on May 1, 1881 by Mayor Isham Hargrave. The population of the city was 116 when it became an incorporated municipality. The history of Cayce began with Colonel William Ladd’s purchase of land southwest of present-day downtown from Captain John Dickson in 1824 and construction began on a log courthouse and jail which were completed in 1830. A post office called Pee Dee had been established in 1819, but it changed its name to Cayce on January 6, 1830 due to local opposition to the new name given to a new community west of Fort Sumter during the War for Independence (1812-1814). The first settler in what is now known as Cayce was Colonel William Ladd who purchased 640 acres southeast of present day downtown from Captain John Dickson in 1824 with plans to erect a store and home depot along with an academy for teaching children farming skills so that they could become selfreliant while growing crops near their homes. However, no successful attempt ever took place to establish this plan because there were many difficulties encountered during development including lack of water; inadequate roads; difficulty getting supplies through hostile Indian Territory;and also prices being too high for settlers willing or able to do much about it all together despite some successes such as founding a schoolhouse at present day corner stores #227 & 228 South Main Street back then known as “Dickson” Storefronts just east side 2nd floor today between Marshall Square & First Floor Carpet Store across from Post Office) . In 1850 General James K Polk moved his family from Tennessee into what is now located northeast Alabama after experiencing great hardship during the Mexican–American War (1846-48) which he called "the separations." After coming down slope he saw that rich bottom land lay available east and south of him - perfect conditions for settlements that would become known as "Polk's Corners." He sent three men upriver under Governor Blount's orders to explore this area - one returned safely with important news while another died after losing his way deep within Indian Territory without finding any sign whatsoever that human beings lived there other than four scattered buffalo skulls found nearby years later when prospectors hit those same areas again looking for coal deposits! On July 4th, 1851 General Polk published an order withdrawing all Native American troops westward within five miles thereof – thus ending hostilities between U S Army officers and Apache Indians living near Tucson AZ following Mexico's Invasion Of Arizona! A group led by General James K Polk formed the Citizens' Committee To organize Government Business In Charleston on October 1st, 1851 which served as model for similar committees throughout South Carolina until statehood came about two years later! At first only white citizens were allowed membership however this restriction soon changed because blacks wanted equal rights too! Black residents quickly realized how valuable their presence would be if government business could be conducted efficiently without having biased individuals participating or making decisions based upon personal prejudice instead of objective reality! On December 5th 1830 Augustus Kelley donated 100 acres (4 square miles) northwest corner lot number 271/272 North Main Street just east side 2nd Floor today between Marshall Square & First Floor Carpet Store across from Post Office), bounded by Pershing Road on one side & Second Street extending northerly 3/4ths along Third Street extendin g easterly 8/9ths along Fourth St., lying included within limits granted recently by act dated March 3d 1840 entitled “An Act For Colonizing This Province With Some Respect To The Colored People Who Are Living Here Secured And Enjoying All That Inholdens Them Which Would Be Consequential To Their Status As Settlers” gave black residents holding real estate therein full title thereto forever – totally reversing prior laws preventing them from ownin g property thereby giving them economic security far beyond anything enjoyed previously by whites living hereabouts!!! This event signaled beginning days not only forblack residents but also future mayors like Isham Hargrave who chaired City Council meetings FROM THE EARLY 1800S THROUGH PRESENT DAYS
