In 1814, when slavery was abolished throughout much of North America due to pressure from Great Britain and France, James Caldwell petitioned for his land to be included within South Carolina under that state’s new law allowing free black people to reside therein without having their rights violated. He received word back from Charleston lawyer Fenton Hughes that he would not be able to receive title because it did not include land lying east of Saluda River which lay within Orangeburg County at that time. After some more fighting between Caldwell and local white supremacists over what should happen next with his land - including a skirmish fought near present day downtown Cayce - he finally won title along with 2/3 acre (1 km²) surrounding area on November 5th 1825 through a process known as “argument by descent” following English common law precedent governing such deeds at the time. The sale price for this property was $2 per acre ($40/km²). On September 12th 1830 President Andrew Johnson granted General Robert E Lee permission – through Executive Order –to build Fort Sumter on Caney Island (just north of modern-day Bayboro) as part of South Carolina’s defense against possible Confederate aggression during the American Civil War; however Fort Sumter never saw combat due to Union naval forces blockading it until April 1865 when it surrendered days after Lee surrendered into Confederate hands

In 1825, another group of white men from Georgia set out on foot to explore what lay beyond the limits of their original territory. When they arrived in what is now known as Cayce, they encountered Native Americans who had been living there for years. The whites were confused by the Indians' behavior and decided not to pursue relations with them further. Over time, other groups began arriving in search of new homes and businesses in what is now Cayce: Germans in 1827; Scots-Irishmen in 1830; African Americans in 1831; Venezuelans in 1840; Japanese immigrants in 1863; Irish Catholics from County Cork settled at White Sands Beach between 1860-1865; Baptists from Scotland settled at Green Gables Landing between 1865-1867; German Catholics from North Carolina at Dutch Harbor until 1880s when most moved back eastward into Pennsylvania or Ohio after General Grant's victories over Confederate forces during the American Civil War
