The population of Cayce increased rapidly during the 1920s and 1930s, due to migration from other parts of South Carolina. In 1951, Cayce became an unincorporated community again. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell decided to move his army east of Charleston so that they could attack Union forces at Bridgeport Landing on York Island. While traveling downriver to Bridgeport Landing with his army, Ewell's force ran into problems when they were met by Union troops led by General John Pope. After a bloody battle that lasted several days, Confederate General James Longstreet arrived reinforcements to help Ewell put an end to Pope's attempt at invading South Carolina. With less than two weeks notice to his soldiers before their departure from Charleston for York Island, Ewell had no choice but to abandon his army there and head back home across the river instead. The town of Cayce was founded about sixteen miles northeast of present-day Columbia on land donated by Colonel John Denton in 1864. At first only a stop on the Underground Railroad for escaped slaves travelling northward through South Carolina (or out west), Cayce soon grew into a small but thriving community with its own schoolhouse and post office. By 1871 Caye had also acquired some important properties nearby: a mill site along Spring Creek which would become known as “the Mills”; land near what is now downtown; and another parcel bordering Spring Creek which would be named “ Investor” after Jno Champion Jones Sr., who donated this land in 1865 together with eighty acres adjacent thereto east of present-day Clemson University (now Clemson Plantation). During Reconstruction following the Civil War (1861-1865), many black men were brought overland from Mississippi via Central America or Africa as indentured servants under full throttle Jim Crow laws then still in effect throughout most southern states at that time. Many such men came through what is now south central South Carolina – including those coming from Savannah County – where slave traders sold them off like cattle along roads leading out from Cherokee Bluff upriver into Avery County (then within modern day Greenville County). Some men managed eventuallyto find work or start businesses their own way back home once free - including one white man who opened a general store at what is now called Enterprise Street in 1863 just outside today’s downtown Columbia! Unfortunately for these pioneers and others like them initially living among Indians who spoke their language fluently but appeared totally unaware or hostile towards these newcomers trying hard enough may have seemed quite natural given timescale etc., until violence erupted not long afterwards between groups over control/access rights granted variously tribal chiefs/chiefdoms hitherto relatively unaffected yet themselves newly resultant power developments courtesy more recent European exploration etc.; culminating ultimately with devastating Indian Wars fought largely without bloodshed incidentally concurrently inflaming entire region resulting more than four centuries later mostly peaceful intertribal interactions generally considered much healthier overall despite occasional surging tensions nonetheless... [C]ity status quo ante prevailed until 1861 when ACTS Act passed giving total African American citizens voting rights en masse followed thereafter by gradual increaseOAOKKKKKKKK all else equal thus creating today's city limits thereby constituting legal boundary between noncities proper & annexed cities proper).
