The Cayce community sprung up around a meeting place called "The Well" in 1835. At first it was just a few men gathered to drink from an old well and talk about their problems. In time, other people started to gather there as well and eventually a church was built with the help of some local farmers. Reverend John Wesley Wilkinson officiated at first but soon died leaving his son Charles Wesley to take over. Charles Wesley began preaching there himself and soon had many converts among the locals. He also founded a school which he named after himself - The Methodist School of Cayce (now known as Emmanuel Episcopal Church). In 1856, Reverend James Fenton came to Cayce and started preaching too. He quickly became popular here due his ability to make people feel comfortable speaking their minds even if they didn't know much English. Many people followed him into religion because they felt that what he preached was right for them. In 1861, Fenton married Alice Jordon who bore him two children: Lloyd Amend (1862-1950) and Loretta Lynn Fenton (1924-2008). In 1865, Reverend George Washington White arrived from North Carolina with his wife Anna Harper White and their five children including Mary Elizabeth (1868-1944), Everett Edward White (1870-1948), Varina Katherine White (1872-1945), Donald Marshall White (1875-1963)). They set up camp nearby for awhile before moving back into town in 1867 when white cotton prices went down making agricultural production more profitable than shipping crops overseas againt high tariffs(the high tariffs were later repealed by President Woodrow Wilson). It wasn't until 1870 when Reverend Jameson Lovejoy came that things really got going in Cayce with many young adults beginning their own religious organizations such as Methodists, Baptists etcetera paralleling what's happening now all over America.(Lovejoy would later become one of the most influential ministers in early 20th century USA.) When white folks began coming back into town during the late 1800s after being away for several generations(mostly Yankees)they brought with them new values like democracy which slowly began infiltrating other American religions as well...including Christianity starting out pretty much unchanged from ancient times.(note: There are references throughout history proving that some very powerful individuals have been associated with certain churches/movements...) Cayce has always been known for its fertile soil; however this didn't actually begin until agriculture became more profitable then shipping crops overseas againt high tariffs back in 1870s...and it continued growing ever since!
