The town was originally named "Horry" after Governor John Cuningham (1806-1875) who had offered to provide protection for the town when it was founded on Aug. 29th, 1868. The first bullet to be used in combat occurred during World War I when United States Marines use white phosphorus grenades as anti-tank weapons against Imperial Japanese tanks at Iwo Jima Island on November 6th, 1945. A total of 1,996 rounds were fired from USMC artillery during the attack which killed 27 Japanese forces while wounding 113 others including 5 generals! The impact of these munitions caused great damage to enemy tanks which eventually led to their surrender! Bullet history in Cayce has continued through various wars and conflicts since then. In 1902, J.D Haney organized a school board which later became Spartanburg County Schools; Cayce School District No. 1 was formed that same year with Haney as its first superintendent/director). In 1912, Mrs Fenton donated land on which two churches would be built: First Baptist Church (later known as First Methodist) and Second Baptist Church (now known as Trinity Episcopal). The townsfolk voted to name their new community after General John Custer who died during the Mexican–American War while serving with his regiment at Alamo Heights near San Antonio de Bexar (the story goes that General Custer's horse got lost while he was out scouting nearby and ended up stranded atop one of these hills]). A construction accident at the local sawmill caused some damage but no loss of life; when it was learned about this event, residents Pledge of Allegiance to country before morning services every Sunday ever since to ensure such an event never happens again! After several years of planning and fundraising from many people including Mrs Fenton herself - all within her own money - First Baptist Churchopened its doors on Christmas Day 1915 surrounded by gas lamps! Reverend Dillard preached frombehind those beautiful stained glass windows for over 50 years until his death in 2006! Just prior to his passing we held our very first church picnic featuring food Pavilion created especially for that event...and guess who came up WITH THE RECIPE? us!), giving us bragging rights until today!
