The Cayce community was founded by white settlers in 1817 when they moved from Georgia to find land west of the Allegheny Mountains. The first post office was established in 1825 and the first school was built in 1829. The town site was surveyed by Captain James Aiken and named after General John Cadell, who had fought in the American Revolution. The first courthouse was built in 1836 and it served as court house until 1907 when it burned down. After that, Cayce used a variety of public buildings until 1959 when it erected its current courthouse which replaced an earlier structure that had been destroyed in a fire. One of Cayce's most famous residents is Lloyd Bowersox who achieved international fame for his role as Professor Charles Xavier on the X-Men TV series from 1990 to 1996. Bowersox also created "A Song for America" which he performed at halftime of the Super Bowl XXVII on February 6, 1992 with then U2 frontman Bono playing lead guitar and other instruments joined onstage by local band "The String Cheese Incident". Cayce is a small town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,453 as of the 2010 census. It was founded in 1881 by J.D. Cayce and his wife Phebe Keyes Cayce. Cayce is named after John Dickey, a settler who came to Spartanburg County in 1851. The town's ZIP code is 29014. In the early 21st century it had a population of 1,500 residents and 400 businesses; however, the growth has tapered off since then due to changes in the local economy and an increase in other nearby towns which have seen larger populations and more businesses. The town was established on land that once belonged to Colonel James Whitefield Johnston who donated it to the government for development into a town site. The first post office was established at Cayce on October 12, 1881; however, it did not open until November 3rd because of lack of mail carriers available at the time. In 1904-1905 school consolidation moved from Columbia to Spartanburg County so that students could be closer to their families; this caused increased tension between Cayce and neighboring towns over how much control each community had over education within its own boundaries. In 1907-1908 new schools were built within Cayce limits while also annexing adjacent towns totaling 6 square miles (15 km2). This action led to increased animosity between these towns and ultimately resulted in several fistfights between students and teachers during this period known as "The Great SchoolFight". On July 15th 1914 two Confederate soldiers were killed when they were shot by Corporal Wirtis while stationed at Exchange Barracks near Cayce; this event served as another impetus for secessionist sentiment among some portions of the community towards the Union Army during World War I which eventually led to major civil unrest throughout central South Carolina ensuing from economic stress brought about by conflict with northern forces occupying Pikeville/Cayce itself as well as surrounding counties including Anderson proper during this time period known variously as The Civil War Years or The Roaring 20s.[1] Although most people living in CayCE supported unionism throughout WWI,[2][3][4][5] there were sporadic outbreaks of violence[6][7] culminating with an attempted robbery [8] on April 11th 1919 that resulted in one soldier being killed;[9] following which calls for war against Abraham Lincoln became more common among some residents culminating with skirmishes leading up to what became known as "The Battle of Bridgeport" on May 5th 1920[10]. On November 5th 1920 General Robert Ewell ordered all troops out of central South Carolina except for those manning Fort Sumter after learning that white militiamen prevented black soldiers from entering into Charleston Harbor where they would have surrendered if allowed.] On December 2nd 1920 civilian mobs burned down 10 buildings including 3 churches located near downtown-> Shortly afterwards 4 guys walked into Main Street bar & grill & started firing shots---- resulting in 2 dead & 16 injured -> One storeowner (& many others) took cover behind his bar---- ordering his customers notto come out until he could get back inside--> Eventually police arrived & ended the altercation
