Cayce is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. It was established in 1817 by Major Josiah Gregg and Dr. James Caldwell as part of the Indian Removal Act of 1830. The population was 538 at the 2010 census. Cayce is part of the Columbia, South Carolina Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was named after George Cayce, an American explorer who had explored parts of what is now South Carolina in the early 19th century. In 1810-12 he and his brother John traveled through this area and discovered important salt pans on inland rivers which led to their discovery that there were vast amounts of crude oil available in this region for sale to European exploration companies. George Cayce's son also explored this area and prospected for oil hereabouts before his death in 1853.. In 1870-71 Confederate General Prentiss made an abortive attempt to invade Union territory through what is now Spartanburg County while army forces were withdrawn from Georgia due to heavy casualties sustained at Vicksburg (in Mississippi). A small force assembled under General Jubal Early moved northwestward from Kershaw Island across the Saluda River into Union territory near present day Cayce on February 6, 1870 without warning or battles being fought; but when they reached about two miles from where they were supposed to start activity began among local residents which soon escalated into open warfare with Confederate troops encountering no resistance until nightfall when Federal forces attacked unprovoked according to plan resulting in more than 100 killed including General Early himself along with many others captured or drowned trying unsuccessfully to cross the river unaided over snow bridges upstream
Cayce was founded in 1811 by a group of investors from Charleston, South Carolina. The town quickly became an important stop on the Underground Railroad because it offered safe haven to fugitive slaves. Cayce also served as a center for slave trading and was home to one of the largest slave markets in the Southern United States.
