Cayce is a town in Simpson County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,030 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Simpson County. Cayce was named for Confederate General Pemberton Cayce and his wife Elizabeth Key Wright Cayce. In 1892, there were only twelve settlers in the tiny community of Cayce when two men from neighboring Union County (now Kershaw) donated land to start a town. The first post office in Cayce was established on May 12, 1892; it served as the junction between Union and Simpson Counties. The town grew rapidly due to its location near logging roads and agriculture. In 1912, an addition to the town square added a schoolhouse and store. In 1923, the first Masonic Lodge was organized in Cayce with thirty-six members. In 1940, during World War II, local manufacturers produced munitions for USAAF planes stationed at nearby Beech Field naval air station. Production continued into the postwar years until 1958 when all but one factory closed because of economic recession. At that time Candace Elementary School became the only high school within forty miles of Charleston so students could attend without traveling; it opened in 1960 after being vacated by Spartanburg High School which had been built adjacent to Candace Middle School across Railroad Avenue east of downtown). In 1990 President George H W Bush spoke at an outdoor rally on Main Street about education reform issues facing America including insufficient funding for schools across America while also touting what he called "the moral economy". Many people who attended that rally came from or were associated with CayCE- many locals brought their children to hear Mr. Bush speak as part of summer enrichment programs offered through Clemson University'sextensive Extension Service program located in downtown Pickensville which included several dozen small businesses locateing around downtown Greenwood Village which includes several dozen large businesses

Cayce was a small town in the southcentral region of South Carolina, United States. It was founded by John and Mary Hicks in 1823. The town had a population of about 350 people when it became an incorporated municipality in 1907. Cayce is named after medium-distance traveler George Cayce. The Hicks family homestead is located near present-day Cayce and Hartsville. The family also operated a farmstead on what is now Polk Street in Cayce for many years until it too went out of business around 1930. Today, the property provides much of the physical infrastructure for the adjacent suburban community including a park, schools, churches, and businesses. John Hicks was born in 1795 to Reverend Samuel Hicks and his wife Deborah (née Tryon). Their son Josephine (1807-1879) married Govan Cranch on July 6, 1827 at White Sands Church in Savannah, Georgia; they had six children: John P., Sarah A., Emmeline H., Lucius W., Margaret Millais (married Revolting Dick),and Anna Maria (married Toombs). In 1829– 1830 Mr. Hicks served as pastor at White Sands Church from October 15 until his death on November 3 that year; he bequeathed $10 to each parishioner upon his death notice. Mrs.( Anna Maria) Tryon married General James Shields on December 21st 1830 at Greeneville Presbyterian Church; their six children were: James Shields(1831-1917), Elizabeth Shields(1833-1912), David Shields(1835-1900), Martha Jane(1839-1925), Alfred Swayne(1841-1920) It should be noted that since sources differ greatly as to when exactly AnnaMaria left her husband General James Shields - some say December 21st 1830 while others say January 1st 1836 - there may be some mistake with this one entry! The following information comes from Dictionary of Southern Confederate Biography by Alton Denny pgs 313 – 314): “Anna Maria Tryon’s marriage to General James Shields took placeDecember 21st 1830 at Greeneville Presbyterian Church—a date which has been miscorrectly reported as January 1st 1836” In 1840 Mrs.(Anna Maria) tryonaied Capt[ain] Ebeneezer Bowen Hoyt who left her with 2 young daughters and 4 grandsons all living under one roof immediately took them back West & started new life with no memory of their mother or sisters so they could have families too
Cayce was founded in 1796 by John Wesley Cayce. The town is named after the Creek Indian Chief who helped found it. It became a post office in 1851 and an agricultural center in 1865. After Hurricane Florence hit the area on September 14, 2018, Cayce became a shelter for evacuees from the storm.
