The first school building was completed in 1903 and served grades one through six until 1975 when it was replaced by the current high school building which opened in 1978. In 1924, hurricanes Hugo and Floyd destroyed most of Greenville and nearby towns including Cayce; however, within three years all but four structures had been rebuilt or replaced with new ones thanks to private donations from individuals and organizations such as Lions Clubs InternationalUSA (LCI) and United Way Worldwide Incorporated (UWII). Aiken Memorial Library opened its doors on October 6, 1928 after being dedicated by Governor John Murchison with Mayor James Peebles serving as honorary chairman. Shotgun shells with lead content greater than .25 caliber per pound are still legal to purchase today but rifles and shotguns must now be equipped with metal cases that hold less than 20 rounds per magazine
Cayce began as a small town in the early 1800s, and soon became an important center for slave trade. In 1808, Cayce was purchased by General John C. Brevard, who used it as a military base. It was during this time that the town obtained its name: "Brevard's Landing." The hard work and dedication of the local farmers allowed Cayce to become one of the most prosperous towns in South Carolina. However, the economic difficulties of the late 19th century caused many people to leave Cayce, including some of its original residents. In 1915, Brevard sold Cayce to developer James Tabor for $10,000. Tabor renamed it "Cayce Plantation" and developed it into a large plantation with over 150 slaves working on plantations across five miles of land. By 1923, only 10% of the slaves remained on Cayce Plantation; however, it still remains one of South Carolina's most significant slave holdings today.
Cayce was founded by a group of farmers in 1814. The town became a stop on the Underground Railroad and was used as a safe haven for fugitive slaves. Cayce is home to several churches, including First Baptist and Methodist.
