Bluffton, South Carolina is a small town located in the Ashley County region of South Carolina. The population was 4,831 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte metropolitan area. Bluffton was founded in 1824 by John Wilkinson and his family. He named it after a bluff on which he had seen an Indians encampment while hunting deer near his home. The first settlers arrived in 1830 and built a cabin on what is now Main Street. In 1836, Bluffton went through a fire that destroyed most of the town except for four homes and two churches which were rebuilt with money from local farmers. The townsfolk elected their first mayor, Aimee Witherspoon, in 1838. Witherspoon was responsible for organizing school services and creating roads and bridges in the community. She also developed a country store to support the town's economy. In 1840, Bluffton became one of thirteen counties within Ashley County when it was created from parts of Pickens County and Beaufort County.[1] On July 11, 1860, Confederate forces under General Pee Dee Hull occupied Bluffton during the American Civil War when they failed to capture Charleston following its fall to Union Forces under Sherman.[2] The Battle of Fort Sumter occurred nearby on April 12th 1865,[3] leading to African American=American integration into Ulysses S Grant's army as soldiers carried out marches through Ashley County towards Richmond Field where white men were being drafted into Confederate military units.][4] Afterward, many black people moved away from Ashley County because Reconstruction policies had not been implemented well enough among all races; however some still resided there until 1960s when they left for other parts of South Carolina or North Carolina due to racist attitudes towards Black people following World War II.[5][6][7][8][9][10] Today Bluffton remains an agricultural community with several thousand residents who farm cotton, corn, soybeans and other crops; cattle; pigs; horses; motorboats; fishing boats;and powerboats on its main streets. According to the 2000 census,[11] about 90% ofbluffsons residents are white (or Caucasian) while 10% are black or African American (of any race).[12][13][14] There has been little change since 1990 with blacks making up just 6% (2010 Census) out of 4

Bluffton is a small town in Pickens County, South Carolina. It was founded in 1814 by Methodist missionaries. Bluffton is the oldest community in Pickens County and one of the earliest towns in the state. The present-day town was first settled by Methodists in 1814 and named for Major General John Butler, who defeated British forces at Battle of Cowpenn Ridge on October 7, 1814. The town was originally located on the banks of the Hiwassee River, about two miles downstream from today's downtown Bluffton. The area now occupied by downtown Bluffton was first an open space near where the courthouse now stands. A sawmill and grist mill were built here around 1800; these mills processed wood and other materials that were brought downriver to be used in local homes and businesses. In 1827, a post office was established at what is now downtown Bluffton; it served as the center of trade for this part of Pickens County until 1875 when mail service was transferred to Columbia. In 1865, Confederate troops burned down several blocks of buildings near today's intersection of US 421/South Carolina Highway 2 (today's Main Street) and US 299 (now US 421), known then as "the powder magazine." This event helped to create a lasting impression on subsequent generations of residents who dubbed themselves "the burners" because they had such control over this important natural resource. As early as 1785, white settlers had begun moving into what is now northeast corner of Pickens County north of Interstate 95W; these pioneers were among those who formed the nucleus around which later various missionary settlements developed. Three years later, Revivals began taking hold throughout much of South Carolina with particular focus on areas along riverside valleys - including what is now northwest corner Pickens County - whence many evangelical ministers traveled to preach gospel messages across southern states during this period called "The Great Revival." Episcopal missionaries also arrived soon thereafter to proselytize amongst African Americans living along riverbanks adjacent to Charleston Harbor; these missionaries are often credited with helping spur development within northeast Cornerstone Township which lies just east of modern-day Charleston city limits. In 1825-26 alone, more than 60 black converts were baptized at a Methodist church located southward along today's Avery Boulevard from today's downtown Bluffton; this congregation became known as First Church United Baptists after its move from its original location on Tryon Road southeastward towards modern day Greenville following a fire that destroyed their building in 1830). After emancipation came Mississippi slavery circa 1865 which resulted in large numbers relocated from rural areas into newly developing metropolises like Columbia or Savannah GA etc.; most blacks remaining behind within southeastern portions Of SC until well into late 19th century era when new Immigration started arriving accountin gto white farmers seeking land for cotton plantations especially during Gilded Age era (1890s–1920s). By 1930 Census there remained only 6 black residents living within City limits while almost all white residents had moved out or left for economic reasons during that decade according to U S Census Bureau reports .
