Bluffton is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 3,527 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Spartanburg County and has been since 1868. Bluffton is located on the Hiwassee River, about 15 miles (24 km) south of Spartanburg. The first Europeans to visit what is now Bluffton were two men from North Carolina who explored the area in 1795-96: John Smith and James Robertson. They named their new discovery "Bluffton" after Indian chief British general Sir William Blount for his defeat of him at Battle of Fallen Timbers near Chattanooga in 1794. There are several theories as to why "Bluffton" was chosen as the town's name - one popular theory suggests that it was so that people would not mistake it for an abbreviation such as "Buford". In 1801, General Andrew Jackson led a military expedition against Creek Indians in what is now southern Alabama and discovered a saltpeter mine at nearby Attalla. This led to Jackson's decision to establish Fort Pillow on Hiwassee River overlooking the saltpeter mine and trade with Native Americans through traders such as David Levy and Hugh Lawson Manly. In 1818, while surveying land adjacent to present day Bluffton along Hiwassee River, Colonel Edmund Kirby Foot took note of what he thought appeared to be high ground on which he believed could be a fortification position for future Confederate troops should they ever enter South Carolina during the American Civil War. He called this location "Fort Pillow", after General Joseph Epps' former command post in northeastern Georgia where Union forces had repulsed an attack by Confederate General Robert Ewell on April 12, 1861 (Ewell's aborted attempt to drive south from Tallapoosa Bend). When Fort Pillow wasn't completed until 1834 following survey work supervised by Captain James Auldsley, local residents began calling it simply "BlUFFTON". The name stuck and today many people identify themselves as being from 'BlUFFTON'. According to historical documents available online dating back to 1865-1966 (published by The History Department at Clemson University), there have been three major fires within town limits – both natural disasters caused by lightning strikes – each resulting in substantial damage: 1) May 24th 1886 – A severe fire destroyed most of buildings within 500 feet (150 m) of Main Street; over $2 million worth of property was lost 2) November 9th 1902 – A severe fire burned down almost all business buildings within 500 feet (150 m) of Park Avenue; total loss estimated at $4 million 3) October 8th 1916 – A large tree fell into Masonic Lodge Hall killing all six occupants including Master Workman; damage estimated at $30 thousand dollars
Bluffton was founded in 1833 by Captain John P. Bluffs as a small trading post on the Savannah River. The town grew rapidly and soon became an important transportation and military center, thanks to its location at the crossroads of two major routes that crossed the river. In 1851, Bluffton was renamed for General James H.Blount, Jr., commander of Confederate forces during the American Civil War. The town continued to grow until it reached its peak in the early 20th century, when it had about 40,000 residents. By 1925, however, Bluffton had declined significantly and only had 10,000 residents remaining.
