Bluffton is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Asbury ParkâNewark, NJ-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by George Catlett in 1799 as "Broadcreek". In 1837, it changed its name to "Bluffton" after General James Bluff's victory at the Battle of Blufordtown in North Carolina. The first public school opened in 1839 and the first courthouse was built in 1840. The community became an important railroad center during the early 20th century with several major lines passing through it including the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad and Southern Railway. In 1963, Bluffton became one of three towns located within New Jersey City proper (the others being Jersey City and Newark) when that city merged with Brooklyn Federal Hill to form New York City. When New York City dissolved on September 14, 2011, all municipalities within its former boundaries were transferred to their respective boroughs - including Bluffton - except for Staten Island which remained under NYC control. Today, Bluffton is home to a variety of businesses including casinos and a KFC restaurant/hobby store which has been open since 1978. The town also contains two high schools: Spartanburg High School and Greenville High School where both varsity sports teams play their games at Bankers Life Fieldhouse; Foxwoods Casino Resort & Spa also offers visitors an outdoor pool; as well as many small shops and restaurants serving local cuisine such as crab legs or green beans from Scrooge McDuck's restaurant across from Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

In 1860, Bluffton was the site of a military engagement that led to the secession of Confederate States of America from the United States.
