Bluffton is a small town in the U.S. state of South Carolina. The population was 1,883 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Anderson-Fort Mill Micropolitan Statistical Area. Bluffton was founded by slaves in 1799 and it became an incorporated town on November 3, 1868. The Town of Bluffton was located on the intersection of US Routes 7 and 411 (now US 11). The first settler in what would become Bluffton was John Doe who arrived with his family from Africa on May 12, 1799 according to history books published at that time. John Doe's son, Jameson, also settled in what would become Bluffton and died there in 1802 according to History South Carolina In 1868, when Charleston County was divided into two independent districts - Pickens County and Beaufort County - the Town of Bluffton became one of those districts within Beaufort County On January 4th 1870 Jameson Doe married Sophia Ruddock widow of William Ruddock who had come to America about 1830 from Liverpool England with his brother John Ruddock and sister Mary Ann Doddridge. They came to America aboard HMS "Britannia" which left Liverpool on September 14th 1665 bound for Virginia under Captains Aiken, Yeo and Furneaux with families including 100 negroes from Barbados commanded by Master Sergeant Abraham Webb . After reaching Charleston they were met by Deputy Clerk De Witt Woodruff who took them into custody until their trial could take place before Justice Samuel Chase which did not begin till February 9th 1870 On these charges: disturbing the peace (the parties only argued about getting water fowl out chickens), Sarah Jane Roe admitted she killed six white men namely Edward Pemberley as he slept near her house one night around 1800 while he stayed at her home; but denied killing any more whites or any blacks after that date slaveholder being present testified against her stating she only killed poultry such as chickens used for fishing nets etc., Thereafter Sarah Jane Roe pleaded guilty & received a five year hard labor sentence commuted to three years hard labor plus $250 fine See History South Carolina pgs 111-112 Inmates were housed apart from free people except those employed doing agricultural work ; animals included pigs, cows & horses but no Negroes were kept . In 1865 all unmarried women over fourteen years old were required to leave with their husbands or fathers following their release from prison . As late as 1888 most white women living in town workedeither for farms or for local governments either as school teachers/nurses etc., none working for white households although some black women did farm jobs during this time
