Bluffton, South Carolina is a small town in the U.S. state of South Carolina located on the Ashley River. As of the 2010 census, the population was 5,827. It is part of Greenville County and is included in the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson metropolitan area. The town has a history dating back to 1785 when English colonists arrived in present-day Bluffton and founded Nicholson Plantation on what is now known as Slater Street. Nicholson's grandson, John Nicholson, donated land for Presbyterian church construction in 1820 which became First United Methodist Church. The first black church built in Bluffton was African American Episcopal Zion Missionary Baptist Church built in 1909 by Reverend James Aiken and his wife Octavia Epps Aiken and served as their home until it burned down in 1978. In 1915 two white men were arrested after they pulled over an African American man for driving without a license; one was released while the other was held at bond for 21 days before being acquitted because of evidence that he had bought his freedom from slavery at auction six months earlier In 1925 Mayor Claude Newsome organized a citizens' referendum to determine if a school should be established within the town limits. The vote resulted with 91% voting yes against establishing a school outside of town limits while 9% voted no due to concerns about potential enrollment growth withintown limits (the high percentage suggests that many residents did not want schools). After further study it was decided that an additional school would be needed so voters approved $2,000 worth of bonds to construct First Christian School (later renamed Unity High School) on land donated by banker JF Gloveron in 1927 A fire destroyed most of City Hall on October 15th 1929 during prohibition period prohibition law enforcement operations by local sheriff George Cagle resulted in loss of life including mayor Newsome who died immediately following impact On November 3rd 1930 Bluffton elected its first female mayor Mrs Alma Ladd who served from 1932 until her death three years later . On December 2nd 1933 segregation laws were passed banning interracial marriage statewide effective January 1st 1934 . This effectively banned all living souls from living within five miles (8 km) of any courthouse or prohibitory board office with possible exceptions made for whites only weddings and funerals

The town was founded in 1835 by refugees from Charleston, South Carolina who were fleeing the American Civil War. The name comes from an Indian chief's bluff on which they built their first store. The town began to grow rapidly after it became a stop on the Atlantic and Pacific Railway in 1852. By 1860, Bluffton had over 3,000 residents and was home to six churches and two schools. In 1865, Bluffton voters approved a charter for the University of South Carolina (UNC) which soon made it one of America's most prestigious universities. In 1892–93, construction began on what would become known as "The Most Famous Home of All Time", now called Clemson University's Memorial Stadium. In 1924, Bluffton became one of ten small towns that joined together to form the Town of Greenville with a central government that would provide services such as trash collection and land management. During World War II, Bluffton played an important role in providing food for troops stationed in Sicily and Italy and also helped produce munitions used during the war. After World War II ended, many businesses closed down due to difficult economic times but some continue to operate today such as Coca Cola Bottling Company #1 which opened its doors in 1922 and still operates today Bluffton is located at (34.534775,-83.071489). Bluffton is an unincorporated community located in the town of Bluffton, Spartanburg County, South Carolina. It was founded by white settlers in 1828 and was named for General James Wilkinson. The post office moved to Bluffton from Uniontown in 1876.
