Bluffton is a small town in South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,471 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Bluffton County. The land that now makes up Bluffton was claimed by one of these surveyors, John Thornton, as part of his compensation for what he saw as theft from him on his voyage to India. Thornton named his new settlement after himself and laid out a grid plan on which homes were erected starting in 1816. As the population grew and business improved, Thornton donated more land to the village and it became an incorporated town in 1849. In 1861, cotton mills were built in the town and its economy rapidly changed from agriculture to manufacturing; today there are several businesses that support both local jobs and international trade. As part of South Carolina's effort to become more diverse, Bluffton adopted its first African American mayor in 1979 when Alvin Brawley was elected over incumbent Eugene Carr. Brawley served until 1984 when he became governor of neighboring Clemson University before running for re-election as an independent against then-Governor Jim Hodges. He won easily but lost to Hodges two years later when South Carolina joined the Union during the American Civil War In 2002, Bluffton hosted America's Cup competition between Britain's Royal Yacht Squadron and America's own Laser Racing Team; both teams came from nearby Savannah Hill Naval Station which had been chosen as their temporary home through a process led by then Mayor Donnie Smithson. ?BlufferTON has also become known for its annual Apple Blossom Festival which takes place during April or May every year.?

The first settlers of Bluffton arrived in 1795 and were based on the original site of present-day Bluffton. They were led by Captain James Aiken, who had been sent by the British government as an envoy to establish trade with the African slaves living within South Carolina. The captain's group of white explorers encountered many difficulties when they set out from London, but eventually arrived at what is now Bluffton on July 12, 1795. At this point, there were only about 20 black slaves living within South Carolina; however, over time, more and more Africans began moving into South Carolina from neighboring states due to increased opportunities for freedom following the American Revolution. As slavery gradually ended throughout most of America during the mid-19th century, some freedmen decided to move back into areas where they had once owned or worked as slaves. One such group migrated northward towards what is now Bluffton in search of new opportunities. In 1828, a group of Englishmen known as "the Forty Thieves" traveled southward through Georgia and Alabama looking for new land to purchase while still enslaved (they did not believe they would be able to earn their freedom). After reaching Mobile Bay on April 25, 1829, they discovered an area that appeared promising: an uninhabited tract of land called "Thrift Island." After negotiating with local chiefs and selling their enslaved people back into slavery (for $2 per head), they set sail for England with their newly purchased land behind them. This event marked one major victory for abolitionists working against slavery; it showed that free people could find new homes if given the opportunity. However, despite these successes early on in history regarding ending slavery in America – including in BlufTON – it would take another745 years before all Confederate States attacked America and end Reconstruction completely (eventually leading to mass incarceration and disenfranchisementof millions of black Americans).
