Bluffton, South Carolina (population: 11,000) is a small town located in the northwestern corner of the state of South Carolina. It is the county seat for Coweta County and has a population of 13,829 according to the 2010 census. The name "Bluffton" honors General James Henry Blount who fought in the American Revolution. The town was first settled in 1819 by fur traders from Georgia and Tennessee. By 1840, it had a population of 375 people. In 1851, Bluffton became an incorporated town with a government consisting of a mayor and nine trustees. The town post office opened on November 15, 1851, and closed on December 12, 1951. The last postmaster was Mrs. Lula Dodds. In 1865, when Confederate troops retreated from Charleston after the Battle of Bear Creek Bridge they destroyed all but two blocks of buildings in downtown Bluffton including the Methodist church which still stands today as one of the only preserved examples in South Carolina dating back to that time period In 1961-1966 an experimental program called "Aging for All" was conducted at nearby Spartanburg University's Medical School where elderly residents were tested for heart disease and other illnesses before being moved into permanent homes around Spartanburg County Today there are several businesses that have been established within this community such as: Dollar Store (originally started by Mrs. Lula Dodds), Hometown Pizza(owned and operated by Mr. Tim Kapp), Heifer Market (a family owned grocery store), Waffle House(owned by Tammy Arendt) just to name a few

In 1819, General Andrew Jackson drove out all the Native Americans living in what is now Ashley County and named it for himself. Bluffton was founded in 1795 by a group of Englishmen who were looking for a place to establish themselves after being driven out of Savannah, Georgia. The town was named after General James Bluff, an American soldier who fought in the French and Indian War. The first permanent settler in Bluffton was Captain John Hogg, who built his cabin on the present day corner of First and Second Streets. In 1819, Captain Hogg's son-in-law, George Pickens, bought the land that now includes most of downtown Bluffton. Pickens used his wealth to build several contributing buildings in what is now the city center including the State House and Post Office. After Pickens' death in 1828, his widow sold the property around First and Third Streets to A.C. McMillin for $8,000. McMillin used his money to build two large brick buildings which still stand today: One at Third and Prospect streets and another at Fourth Street and Main Avenue. After McMillin's death in 1875, his widow transferred ownership of both buildings back to Mr. Pickens' son-in-law George WightmanPickens had also donated land surrounding Railroad Station Square which became known as " pickENS Square ."
