Bluffton is a city in the U.S. state of South Carolina. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 397 and was the county seat for Beaufort County. The town was founded in 1795 by George Bluffton and named for him. It grew rapidly during the antebellum period as cotton plantations were developed hereabouts. The city experienced significant growth following World War II, when defense production requirements increasedoxygen levels in munitions factories necessitated expansion of downtown into formerly rural areas within walking distance of plants employing thousands of workers. The downtown area has been remodeled many times since then, most notably with an extensive renovation program completed in 2007 that enlarged several blocks on State Street from Broad to Martin Streets, creating what is now one of Charleston's most vibrant districts despite its relatively low population density (1,500 people per square mile). The history and culture of Bluffton are closely associated with its namesake George Bluffton Sr., who first arrived hereabouts in 1795 as part of a group seeking to establish rice plantations on new land grants he had won from King James I after his victory over British forces at Yorktown. He engaged in various agricultural pursuits before becoming successful enough to sell his holdings to others and establish what became known as "The gentleman farmer" movement throughout much southeastern South Carolina; this involved organizing farmers into cooperative societies and selling their products direct to consumers through mail order or street peddlers rather than going through traditional stores or markets where prices were often too high for average citizens to afford. During the late 19th century and early 20th century, Bluffton changed hands several times among English families who controlled large chunks of Beaufort County until it reverted back to Indian ownership following General Robert Epps' 1885 removal expedition which destroyed all but 3 percent (less than 1/10th)of native-owned land statewide; this left behind a vast tract including present day Bluffton that was used primarily for fishing, hunting, farming and logging until white development began again around 1960 due largely to dormitory construction at nearby Clemson University which led directly to employment opportunities for locals during that decade and beyond. In 1907–08 local businessman John Waddell built one of Charleston's earliest skyscrapers - The Post Office Building - on Union Square across from City Hall; it served as headquarters for more than 40 years before being replaced by the current building on Meeting Street in 2006 which is also home to the city offices for both Beaufort County government and City Hall itself. In addition three other buildings near Union Square serve as commercial tenants: Jardine Insurance Company occupied one wing while Aiken Drug Store occupies another wing adjacent thereto; Waffle House sits across from City Hall facing Bank Street while Finally Central Florists occupies an old garage adjoining Meeting Street between Exchange Place & Federal Road likewise serving as office space today though not originally part Of TheCityscape Bluffton has always been heavily influenced by its hinterland - Aside from some recent transplants (largely students) few residents have permanently moved herefrom other parts OfSouth Carolina since 1800s!

Today, Bluffton is home to many businesses including three hospitals and two universities which are all part of Clemson University. It also has several parks including Mount Pleasant Park which features a golf course and baseball diamond as well as Indian Shoals Park which offers views of the river mouth to locals and tourists alike.
