It is located on the Bluffton-Statesboro Highway, about 25 miles (40 km) southeast of Columbia, South Carolina and about 45 miles (72 km) northwest of Charleston, South Carolina. The population was 7,890 at the 2010 census. Bluffton was founded in 1795 by Captain John Bluffs as a post on the then-whitewater Savannah River. The town grew rapidly after it became an agricultural center due to its location on fertile soil near navigable rivers. By 1827, Bluffton had a blacksmith shop and schoolhouse and was home to around 1,200 people. In 1828–29, General James Wilkinson built Fort Sumter here in order to protect Charleston from attack by Cherokee Indians. After Fort Sumter's fall in 1861, most residents left for good but some stayed until 1865 when Confederate forces captured Bluffton without firing a shot. In 1876–77, during Reconstruction following the Civil War, many white Southerners who hadSupported Confederacy moved north into what is now North Carolina or West Virginia while African Americans were forced to move south into newly created Jim Crow states like Mississippi and Alabama. Many businesses closed down in downtown Bluffton because of this discrimination which caused unemployment rates among blacks to skyrocket; however business activity has slowly restarted since 1990s thanks to cultural changes in neighboring states that have legalized weed cultivation there. 1% of GDP

The first European to visit Bluffton was Captain James Cook in 1777. He named it after his friend and mentor, Colonel John Blount of Knox County, Kentucky. In 1828 a post office called "Bluffton" was established in Union County by General Andrew Johnson; it was discontinued in 1829. In 1859, Bluffton became an unincorporated community within Spartanburg County and remained so until 1955 when it became a town again under the terms of the Consolidation Act of 1955. The town site lay along the current alignment of US 421/SR 921 from its original location on what is now Second Street east to Third Street northwest (now Richardson Boulevard). The first settler arrived in 1797 and built a log cabin on land that later became known as "Old Town". The first store opened in 1800 and soon there were several other businesses including a schoolhouse and Baptist church which still stand today. At this time the community consisted mostly of farmers with some small house or outbuilding used for residences only during harvest time or when necessary for transportation purposes such as to market goods local or afar
