The first settlers in what is now Bluffton were Methodist Episcopalians who founded a Lutheran congregation there in 1819. In 1831, General Daniel Boone set up a store and home here to trade goods with Cherokee Indians who were living near Fort Gibson on the Tennessee border. The Cherokees raiding party that year killed four men and two boys at this house when they came by night. This event is sometimes called "The Massacre of Bluffton." In 1865, Confederate Brigadier General John Cofer decided to build his headquarters here after withdrawing from Chattanooga, Tennesee. He named it Fort Pickens in honor of General Joséphine Gourdoué (1763-1846), French general commanding American forces during the Mexican War (1846-48). On July 10th, 1865, Confederate Genl Pickens surrendered at Chattahoochie Bridge over the Ashley River to Union Maj.-Gen James Longstreet following days of battle including one bloody day when more than 1,000 men fought hand-to-hand against an equal number of Confederates under Longstreet's command without artillery support or rest! Today Bluffton contains many businesses that date back to its early years as a small town: A&P Supermarket; BJ's Wholesale Club; Piggly Wiggly restaurant; Sprague Hardware; Furniture Mart; Wells Fargo Bank; Coca Cola Bottling Plant - today part of PepsiCo - as well as numerous smaller businesses such as Ace Hardware Incorporated (founded 1902), Welly's Drug Store (established 1918), Playtime Rentals (established 1946), Home Depot Incorporated (established 1978) and Spurlock Drugs & More Limited Partnership which operates 14 stores throughout South Carolina!. Economic development around bluffson started with farming during late 1800s . With increased demand for cotton due to increasing transportation costs and new technology such as railroadsbluffson became an important center for produce productionand remain so today

Bluffton is a small town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,691 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white person to live in what is now Bluffton was John Sevier who settled there in 1793. A post office called Sevier was established in 1827, and by 1840 it had been renamed Bluffton after General Nathanael Bluffs (1763-1810), an American Revolutionary War general and member of the Continental Congress from South Carolina. In 1848, Jno. Witherspoon arrived from Georgia with his family and set up a mill on the Scioto River near present day Hawkins Hall Road and US 421. From this point on until well into the 20th century many people came to work at the mill including Edwin Forrest (the father of Forrest Gump). In 1902-1903 Isaac Hicks opened a grocery store at 401 Main Street which became one of the most important businesses in town during that time period. Today's Hendricks Drug Store occupies that building which served as a flour millshed until 1978 when it closed its doors permanently due to lack of customers; however, it has been preserved as a museum open to the public since then! The post office moved from its original location on Main Street in 1827 to 3012 Hawkins Hall Road between 1911 and 1912 due to growing population growth in town; within two years all mail had come through that new location so mail delivery ceased for good again! The old schoolhouse currently stands vacant next door to Hendricks Drug Store with plans by developers for development around it but no action has yet taken place! It would be interesting if such an old schoolhouse were not threatened with demolition because it would provide excellent historical evidence about early Bluffton community life! Many local residents who knew about or grew up inside of historic Bluffton are available for interviews should anyone wish to ask about their memories or experiences living there during those times!
Bluffton was founded by white settlers in 1795. It became a town in 1811, and then a village in 1819. It was chartered as a city in 1881. In 1907, it became the seat of Bluffton County.
