Bluffton, South Carolina is a town located in the U.S. state of South Carolina. As of the 2010 census, the population was 16,521. It is the county seat for Spartanburg County and has a population of 21,361 as of the 2014 estimate. The name "Bluffton" is from English place names meaning bluff or height, likely derived from its location on an elevation above sea level and its light-colored earth soil which makes it stand out from other parts of the state. The first white person to live in Bluffton was John Pemberton who arrived there in 1795 during the French and Indian War when he and his family were employed by General Anthony Wayne's army under Chief Pontiac (). In 1802 Captain David Dickson founded what would become known as Bluffton Academy (now Clemson University). The town was platted in 1805 by Colonel James Moore with land that included present-day Bluffton Township, part of Spartanburg County. At that time there were only two stores and three houses in Bluffton; today there are over 50 businesses operating within one kilometer of downtown BlufFton! In 1812 Major General Nathaniel Banks burned all but four miles (6 km) of Charleston Valley while besieging Fort Moultrie after a failed attempt to capture it during the Battle of Myerstown Creek. This destroyed much business along Broad Street which was then renamed Market Street after General Banks' headquarters building now known as First United Methodist Church (c1910). In 1814 Colonel John Singleton bought 1/4 section 4 east of Court House for $2 per acre () giving rise to what is now Singleton Place(). He built his home at this site where he died on February 2nd, 1840. Lieutenant Governor Thomas Jealous appointed him surveyor general for Spartanburg County which office he held until his death on October 15th, 1830 (). On November 14th, 1800 President James Ketchum issued an executive order naming Pickens River "the bounds line between North Carolina and South Carolina". This order authorized removal begin immediately westward toward within those boundaries any negroes found trespassing on public lands south sideof said river... When surveys were made subsequent to this order no Negroes were found living near said boundary so removal became gradual until all slaves had been emancipated by 1865... A post office called "BlufFnton" was established in 1813, and remained in operation until 1893. In 1863 Confederate General Beauregard occupied Union forces at Beaufort Island before retreating across Pickens River northeastward through Blair County into SC territory; here they constructed their own fortifications known as Battery Wagner () northwestward around present day Greenville–New Bern townshiplineshipping onto Beaufort Island opposite modern day Wilmington). After Confederate forces evacuated Beaufort Island following their Siege Of Wilmington begun December 12th 1863 they burned all but six buildings on the island including Beauregard's military barracks (), leaving only one standing still today: battery Wagner (). Bluffton is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 9,828 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bluffton is one of the historic towns in Spartanburg County and was once known as "The Athens of the Midlands". Bluffton was founded on February 14, 1827 by three men named James Loring, John Pemberton and Isaiah Stevens. The name comes from an Indian reference to a bluff called "Bluff Hill". There were no white settlers in what is now Bluffton until around 1853 when two brothers named Wesley and Andrew Smith arrived from Wales and began to hunt deer and hogs near what is now downtown Bluford. They made contact with some local Native Americans who taught them how to farm and trade goods with other tribes. In 1857, Andrew Smith married Sarah Cobbett which gave her legal title to land that lay east of present-day downtown Bluford along current State Route 19A. When Andrew died in 1865 his wife inherited most of the land including what are now downtown Bluford and parts of rural central Spartanburg County (including present day Greenwood). Downtown Bluford grew slowly until around 1880 when entrepreneur Wirt Hargrave purchased 400 acres (1 km2) north of present-day downtown for $500 per acre ($/ha). He subdivided this land into lots size 10x10 feet (3 m2) or less for farming purposes with a building permit being required for each lot development up to 8 stories high containing at least 2 rooms/apartments plus a garage or workshop space above ground level. By 1886, over 100 businesses had been established in downtown including stores such as Taylor's Hardware & groceries; Jenson's Drug Store; Fenton's Furniture store; Gibbs' Clothing store; Post Office; Methodist Episcopal Church - First Baptist Church - Central Presbyterian Church - Second Baptist Church etc.. More than 20% of all business owners were women! Downtown became known as "The Town That Built itself" because so many people built their homes here during its early years without any assistance from government or philanthropists like Wirt Hargrave. By 1907 there were more than 200 residences erected here alone! Downtown Bluford experienced significant growth during World War II as many residents left their homes to help prepare for hostilities overseas. Businesses lost customers but survived thanks to wartime exports such as textiles, shoe leathers and food items like peanut butter which accounted for 60% of total business income during that time period In 1949 Mayor John Crain established the first municipal court within city limits serving all citizens regardless of race so that everyone could have access to justice without havingto go outside thecity limits which then extended beyond Main Street into surrounding rural areas due southward towards Clemson University where black students were then enrolling in greater numbers . This system remained unchanged through much later changes brought about by racial integration which destroyed much old infrastructure including municipal courts before they ever reopened after Brown v Board Of Education ended segregation throughout South Carolina
Bluffton was founded in 1778 by Major John Blount and his wife, Sarah. The town was named after General James Wilkinson, who had led the British invasion of South Carolina in 1814. The first post office was established in 1779, and the first store opened in 1780. In 1801, the town voted to become a separate county. In 1847, the town voted to merge with neighboring Laurens County.
