Anderson is a small town in the U.S. state of South Carolina. The population was 1,876 at the 2010 census. It is part of Greenville County. The first settlers in Anderson were Methodist missionaries who came from Tennessee in 1814 and founded a religious community on a bluff overlooking the Ashley River. Many men from Anderson took active military service with Confederate forces and some even received promotions within the Confederacy for their heroism during the war including Colonel John Huggins (who commanded units near Fort Sumter). At one point more than 900 men from Anderson served in Confederate services out of 479 total male soldiers serving in North Carolina during the war; this number dwarfs any comparable numbers for Union troops throughout the conflict. Afterward, many veterans returned home and built homes in Anderson while others moved away altogether due to economic hardship caused by Reconstruction policies following the Civil War that discriminated against black Americans until post-Reconstruction period discrimination ended nearly eighty years later. Anderson is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 6,868 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Spartanburg County and home to the Anderson Air Force Base. The first permanent settler in Anderson was James C. Burt who arrived in 1827 from Kentucky. He named his land "Moultrie." A post office called Moultrie was established in 1835, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1905. The first school in Anderson was built on what is now Main Street. In 1838, John Waddell founded a sawmill on Post Road just outside of town. In 1845, David Neely moved his family to Anderson from Union County and started a general store on US 21 near present day Airport Boulevard. That same year, Anderson had its first incorporation as a town under the name of "Anderson". In 1861, Confederate Major General William Troup came through Spartanburg County and made an appearance at what is now Battery Park City during their march up South to join forces with General Robert E Lee against the Union army under Ulysses S Grant at Fort Sumter. On July 12th of that year (1861), Confederate General Jubal Early attacked and destroyed part of Greenville's ironclad USS Hatteras while anchored off Kingston Plantation near today's junction of US 131/US 301/US 278/SR 26 In 1865-1866 Confederate Brigadier General Wade Hampton led an attack on Greenwood which resulted in about 350 casualties for Hampton's brigade including almost all its officers; this event has been variously described as one of the largest open-air shootings ever committed by white men against black Americans Later that year (1866)General Gensler ordered all black soldiers stationed along Charleston Harbor evacuated due to throughout African American soldiers being draft lottery selections for service with Confederates; any remaining black soldiers were mustered out within three weeks or they would be surrendered In 1870 citizens raised $10,000 towards purchasing 4 acres downriver from present day downtown known as Old Town Hill where they constructed what would become what is now known as Historic District #2
