In 1670, the Englishman Walter Raleigh imported a number of rifles from Spain. He named them the "Raleigh Rifle." The first rifle in South Carolina was made by Ebenezer Myrick in 1786. It had a stock made of hickory and carved with an inscription reading “This is my rifle, which I took from Scotland, when that country was under the dominion of King James II.” In 1803, John C. Pate developed a new type of stock for his shotguns that became known as the Pate Stock. Thisstock featured a recoil-resistant polypropylene liner to reduce hand fatigue while hunting or shooting. It also allowed shooters to use heavier barrels without causing barrel stress or damage to their stocks. The first white settler in Anderson County was Samuel Gregg in 1819. He erected a log cabin on what is now called Old Fort Gregg and started trading with Indians and other settlers near present day Greenville and Columbia City. In 1825, Captain Fenton bought land at Big Creek for $5 per acre and built Fort Fenton which later becameAnderson Cemetery. In 1830, Captain Fenton married Lydia McFarlane who lived on theFortFenton Ranch until her death in 1865. Her husband built a home there which still stands today known as Lady David’s Home Museum (now part of Anderson University). Captain Fenton served as Anderson County Sheriff from 1830 to 1840 and 1851-1857; he died at age 82 years old on October 5th, 1850 after serving our county for 54 years! Captain John Cramer purchased portions ofFortFenton from Captains Fenton and Kerr in 1861 for $2 per acre ($40 total). This area includesOld fort Gregg Today! A local farmer by the name of Cook acquired some additional land east ofthe fortifications including what is now called Range Roadsteadyhold Chapel . Cook began building his house here about 1870 but it wasn’t finished until 1886 when he donated it to Anderson University! Today we can see evidence that this early structures were intended not only as homes but also as military barracks! Two cannons still remain within easy striking distanceofthe door!!!
