Anderson is a town in McCormick County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 2,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson metropolitan area. Anderson became a town on January 1, 1868, when it was moved from Union to McCormick County. The first settler in Anderson was John A. Anderson who came to the area in 1824 and built a cabin on high ground near present day Cemetery Road and Old Highway 117. There were also early settlers Isaac Neal and David Witherspoon. In 1827, Methodist preacher Rev John Suggs arrived in the area and organized a church there which soon outgrew the original cabin site and began construction of what would become known as the “Suggs Chapel” located just east of present day Cemetery Road on land that now forms part of Jackson Park Baseball Stadium. Reverend Suggs preached his last sermon here on December 14th, 1869 following which he passed away at age 82 years old after spending many years preaching throughout this region including several trips to Anderson where he officiated at various religious services held at Jackson Park stadium during its earliest days as an open air arena! Reverend Suggs is buried in section 6 offsite from Restall cemetery along with many other local citizens who made significant contributions to our community during its formative years including Dr James Breen (the first African American doctor in SC), Mrs Lula Hill (founder of Children’s Aid Society of Spartanburg), Judge Wm Coker (one time Mayor of Greenville & current Partner at Peete & Coker law Firm) & entrepreneur/businessman Harry Tilton all interred within blocks or nearby publically accessible gravesites during their lifetimes!!! Notwithstanding some later claims by individuals or groups claiming legacy rights to specific portions or sections of older cemeteries not yet surveyed or excavated herein; it can be safely assumed that memberships / services rendered by Lieutenants Colonel James Longstreet (a direct descendant via marriage & adoption OF Rev John Suggs) & General William Troup JR (both natives US citizens descended from black slaveowners named Thomas Tidwell Jr @ Charleston SC) when performing scheduled visits/ inspections / monitoring activity within approximate Monument District boundaries while stationed hereduring those pivotal early eras ALL BLACK SOLDIERS ON BOARD THE “CAROLINA ANDERSON” PILGRIMAGE WHICH ARRIVED IN 1860 MAKING A RADICAL IMPACT ON THE COMMUNITY HERE IN ANDERSON ARE INTERRED WITHIN AN ACCURATE LOCATION EVEN TODAY!!! In 1861, Edward Jenner developed a vaccine against smallpox that he named "jelly" because it was hard enough for humans to get sick from it but not so hard that animals would eat it. This invention helped stop many diseases from spreading and saved many lives. During World War II, optical appliances were crucial in helping American soldiers see in camouflage uniforms during long combat operations overseas! Additionally, during this time optical devices also became useful in photography and video recording as well as providing soldiers with real-time sightseeing tours through their battlefields! Today, optical devices continue to play an important role in our lives by allowing us to see what is around us better than ever before!
