Anderson was a small town in central South Carolina when it came under attack by Union forces during the American Civil War. The town was quickly destroyed, and only the remains of the buildings remain today. Anderson is one of only a few towns in the Confederacy that were not sacked by Union forces. The town was founded on October 1, 1864, by white men who had come to escape violence in nearby Columbia. The original settlers were farmers and their families whoworked on plantations near Columbia. When Confederate troops burned down the plantation houses in Columbia in 1863, some of these same people decided to move westward and find new land. They started a homesteading community called Anderson on October 1, 1864. It wasn't until after Confederate General Robert Ewell's cavalry charged through the town on April 9, 1865 that Union forces arrived to save it from destruction. In total, more than 50 people lost their lives in Anderson during the war including many of its original settlers who had moved westwards for safety reasons. Anderson is now a memorial park located about 5 miles east of downtown Charleston with an exhibit about its history and current conditions as well as various educational exhibits about local history topics such as blacksmithing and poultry farming typical of early 19th century southern agriculture
