The name Anderson comes from Andrew Johnson, who served as President of the United States from 1881 to 1889 and as Governor of South Carolina from 1895 to 1897. The town is named for General James A. Anderson who fought in the American Civil War and later became a U.S. Senator from Virginia. In 1916, Anderson residents erected a statue of General James A. Anderson on the estate where he had been born circa 1785 in nearby Kershaw County. The statue is still there today and can be seen by visitors during guided tours around town every day except Saturday when it is closed to the public due to maintenance purposes carried out by local government officials and private citizens working together under one roof!

Anderson is a small town in Pickens County, South Carolina, United States. It is the smallest community in Pickens County and was established as a post office on July 3, 1868. The population was 1,371 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Anderson was James A. Anderson who arrived in 1851 from Kentucky. He built his house on what is now Main Street about four miles south of the town center. In 1865, Johnnie Lee Hardin platted and named Anderson after General Robert E. Lee's hometown of Andersonville, Georgia. In 1861, Confederate General Joseph Ewell decided to move his headquarters from Jacksonville to Spartanburg because he felt that Richmond's military might would be too weak to resist an invasion by Union troops under Brigadier General Ulysses S. Grant if they remained within Confederate territory. Ewell ordered his forces to march northeast along the Pee Dee River towards Columbia instead of towards Jackson which would have allowed Union troops under General Don Carlos Buell access to the river without having to cross it first - an operation known as "the crossing". For this brave decision, Ewell was brevetted brigadier general by President Abraham Lincoln upon his return from Gettysburg and given command of all Confederate forces in South Carolina except for one brigade which remained at Jacksonville under General Winfield Scott Johnston until May 1863 when he evacuated Charleston for fear of another Union Invasion! Anderson became incorporated as a village on February 17th 1907 with a population of 399 residents. On May 9th 1911 there were 561 residents living in 318 dwellings situated around a central square measuring 40x40 feet with two blocks between each dwelling formed into four acres (14×14 m). Three years later on November 15th 1915 581 residents lived in 336 dwellings located around a central square measuring 42x42 feet with three blocks between each dwelling formed into six acres (18×18 m). A fire destroyed most of the village on December 12th 1916; however no one was killed or injured during the fire which burned for two days destroying 153 buildings valued at $2 million ($ when measured against current values) including 39 churches and 6 schools; five water towers; 2 cotton ginners; 4 tanneries; 4 blacksmiths; 2 hospitals; 1 Masonic Lodge No 7; 1 Baptist Church (First Baptist); and 2 stores ( Hardware Store & Mercantile Exchange). During World War I the town supported both American and British service members with many businesses providing goods and services unavailable elsewhere such as eating out restaurants catering specifically to their needs or furnishing barracks with everything from radios/televisions/lawnmowers/toiletries/cooking pots etcetera while also selling war supplies such as gasoline cans filled with coal providing power for generators used by local industries while also manufacturing munitions such as artillery shells using local resources including sandpaper found near riversbottom batteries where cannon fires could be seen daily during peacetime! With so much going on during those dark times Andersonians showed great resilience helping contribute over 10%(over $1 million)of total wartime production! After World War II things slowly died down but never really stopped happening until its resurgence beginning around 2008-2009 when some people decided that it wasn't worth trying to revive something that had been dead for too long
