Anderson, South Carolina is a small town located in the Hiwassee Valley of north-central South Carolina. The population was 5,818 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Anderson County. The first permanent settler in what is now Anderson County was David Hill in 1819. In 1827, John Silloway founded Elysburg, which became the county seat of Anderson County in 1840. Anderson and Spartanburg counties were consolidated into Anderson County on February 15, 1907. The name change came about because much of the land within Spartanburg and Anderson Counties had been donated to the new county by individuals or groups who saw it as their right as part of Cherokee Nation territory that had been ceded away by Creek Nation leaders to European settlers after the American Revolution. In 1911, a courthouse and jail were built in downtown Spartanburg and served as temporary1100 jails until a more permanent structure could be built. The first resident justice was Samuel Peebles from 1915 until his death in 1920; then Judge Ozzie Folsom from 1923 until his death in 1951; then Justice Edward "Toots" Hardwick from 1957 until his retirement in 1984. Governor Allen Iverson attended one (1) game of an exhibition basketball game played at DairyLand Park on November 9, 1985 against Dutchtown High School (now known as Greenville HS). On July 14th 1990 United States Senator Jesse Helms visited Anderson Municipal Airport to present Air Force One with a special award for excellence in airport operations during Operation Desert Storm – this event also took place at adjacent Greenville AFB where combat operations began less than 24 hours later on September 2nd 1990. This airport has since been renamed Moody AFB after Robert Easley Moody III who served as Governor of South Carolina from 1997-2001 and 2006-2010

Anderson was founded on December 20, 1814 byCaptain James A. Anderson, who became the first white settler in what is now Anderson County. The town was named for Colonel John Anderson, an officer of the United States Army who served in the Mexican-American War and in Creek Indian Wars. In 1835, Colonel John Anderson donated land to the town for a public square and schoolhouse. In 1851, Captain James A. Anderson's son, General James A. Anderson (1815-1865), donated more land to the town for a courthouse and other civic buildings. The towns growth continued through the years as increasing numbers of farmers moved into the area and began to grow cotton plantations and rice fields. By 1930, there were over 10 thousand residents inAnderson County. Today, Anderson is home to several colleges and universities including South Carolina State University (SCSU), which was founded in 1911; Clemson University; Winthrop University; Presbyterian Theological Seminary; Baptist Theological Seminary; Methodist Episcopal Church - Jackson Chapel Complex; and First Baptist Church of Andersonville which opened its doors in 1865. In 1937-38, during World War II, many local homes were used as military barracks for soldiers fromSouth Carolina stationed abroad. As a result of this activity some structures withinthe city limits have been destroyed or damaged such as One Masonic Lodge #1 (built 1859) located on Meeting Street across from City Hall which has been completely demolished but remnants can still be seen inside its former walls today Additionally two churches – First Presbyterian Church (1853) on Pryor Street adjacent to City Hall that has also been extensively damaged but still standing with original brick façade remains while Second Presbyterian Church (1901) located at 1000 Spring Garden Street just east of City Hall has had most Its windows smashed out but partially preserved facade remains today
Anderson was founded in 1764 by James Anderson, a slaveholder and naval officer. The town was named for the then-new found township of Anderson in South Carolina. It grew rapidly and soon became one of the most important settlements on the southern frontier. In 1814, Anderson was given its own congressional district, making it one of the first U.S. districts to be represented by a solely white population. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell's army passed through Union territory near Anderson and destroyed many homes and businesses along the way. This sparked a large response from local residents, who quickly rebuilt their homes and businesses as best they could. The town remained largely untouched until Hurricane Katrina damage caused significant damage in 2005-2006 which again forced locals to rebuild completely anew.
