Anderson was founded in 1827 as a trading post on the Savannah River by Alexander Anderson and his family. In 1851, Anderson's grandson, Jesse Aiken, donated land to build what is today the town Square. Settlers from surrounding counties arrived in subsequent years and by 1865 had built a courthouse and several stores and homes. The present day Anderson community was formed when the city of Spartanburg annexed the village of Dundee in 1957. In 1960, Anderson voters passed a referendum approving annexation into Spartanburg County. The new city would have included all of present-day Anderson with its own police department, fire department, library system and other services that Spartanburg County lacked. After two years of planning and construction, incorporation finally took place on November 1, 1962 with an initial population of 2,272 residents. TodayAnderson remains one of South Carolina's smallest towns with a population over 3,000 people - fewer than half of whom are downtown residents who work in businesses within walking distance or bike commuting distance (the rest live mainly outside central business district). With such low population density it has difficulty meeting even modest development goals set for it by local officials because there are simply not enough residences or businesses to support significant growth without distortion to existing neighborhoods or negative impacts on adjacent properties values or infrastructure needs (e.g., more traffic deadheading through square for goods than coming into town for shopping). Despite this challenge some Adamsons have worked tirelessly to make their community better - from hosting annual festivals like arts & crafts show at square each year until now providing free wi-fi service throughout the community so residents can connect while they shop; to creating partnerships with various organizations that support economic development including childhood hunger relief efforts; to donating land near square for new housing developments; and most recently working together with developers in neighboring towns – arrangement called "cityhood" –to create mixed use neighborhoods around major intersections that will include affordable housing units as well as commercial/residential space

Anderson was a small town in South Carolina during the 1800s. Anderson's population peaked in 1810 at 104 people, but decreased to only 8 by 1850. However, Anderson's history goes back much further than that. The first settler in what is now Anderson was James Cook, who arrived in 1795. Cook built a cabin on the banks of the Ashley River and named his settlement after himself, Anderson Station. In 1806, John Caffrey settled down around the same time as Cook and founded Cedarville also within present-day Anderson. The town of Anderson began to grow rapidly from its early settlers during the 1830s onwards. By 1840, it had over 150 residents and had begun to build churches and schools. During this time period,Anderson became an important center for slave trade activity because it was one of the few sections of South Carolina where slaves were allowed to reside legally and work off their passage across the Atlantic Ocean. After Reconstruction ended following the Civil War, many white families leftAnderson for other parts of South Carolina while African Americans continued to be forced into working service roles in local businesses and homes until well into the 21st century. Today, remnants of old buildings still stand within downtown Anderson testament to how strong this community once was despite its current challenges
