Anderson is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 5,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Anderson was David Dickey, who arrived in 1795. A post office called Anderson was founded in 1811, and remained in operation until 1865. The town was named for General James Anderson, who fought against the British during the American Revolutionary War. The first school was built in 1814 by J.D. Ladd and Hosea Hawkins. In 1830, a Methodist church was built on State Street; it remains active today and serves as the town center's only building of note. In 1836, Isaac Poole moved his family to Anderson from Lexington County, South Carolina after purchasing land there from John Robertson. He became one of the most successful farmers in Anderson with holdings that included over 20 slaves at one time or another Poole employed enslaved blacks to help him operate his farm until their freedom were granted by President Abraham Lincoln on April 12th 1865 following the Emancipation Proclamation Anderson played an important role during Reconstruction as a black community that supported white rule while working towards self-reliance After reconstruction ended in 1896, many people left Anderson for other parts of Spartanburg County The current incarnation of Anderson began to take shape when developers purchased land east of State Street fromthe local African American congregation which had been operating there since 1920 Since then, much development has taken place including retail space along US 421/501A (now known as Pettit Road), new housing developments (including the iconic White House Apartments) and more commercial property around US 421/501A and Pettit Road

Anderson is a town in Richland County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 2,594 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg metropolitan area and is the county seat of Richland County. The first white settlers in Anderson were two families from North Carolina who came to this area in 1825. They named their new community "Newbern." In 1830, Colonel James Hogg settled a farm about one mile south of Anderson on the banks of rivers called the Yamhill and Pickens. He built a log cabin and named it Hogg's Mill after his friend, Colonel John Pickens. This location became known as Anderson because Colonel James Hogg built his mill there. In 1836, James Wofford bought land southwest of Anderson from Captain John Manning for £1 per acre (about $10 per square foot). He began construction on what would become Wofford's Store which opened in 1838. This store was the nucleus of what would become today's downtownAnderson. In 1840, Wofford married Anna Prentiss and they moved to their farm near present day Parkersboro to start anew. Their home remains as one of Anderson's most prominent landmarks today and has been restored by volunteers since 1978! After some time away from business operations due to health problems he passed away suddenly on October 11th 1880 at age 69 years old leaving behind an unfinished business empire that included more than 50 stores throughout southern South Carolina! His widow Anna continued running Wofford's store until her death in 1925 before passing it along to her son-in-law Samuel Caffey Jr.. In 1928 Samuel Caffey Jr.'s wife Bella died leaving him with 3 children: Sarah (b born 1931),future Congressman Judd Caffey (1935-) & daughter Tricia (b 1955)). In 1934 Sarah married future Congressman Joe Biden Sr., making her very close family friends for many years! Finally upon Joseph Biden Sr.'s death in 1988 his widow Jill announced that she will assume management duties but turned down offers for control over the store when offered it instead! She still owns approximately 85% or all active stock left by her late husband! Today Jacksonville businessman David Ladd took over management duties effective January 1st 2009 Anderson history begins with its establishment in 1825 when two families settled here from North Carolina after traveling through Georgia & Tennessee looking for land to settle: James Hogg (Hoggs) & Mr Fenton(Fenton). In 1830 Colonel James Hogg purchased 640 acres just south of town on #2 River called Yamhill River which became known as "Hogg’s Mill" after himself & Col JohnPickens whom he befriended while living hereabouts (& also later served as Postmaster here ‘til his death circa 1865). From this location JAMES WAFFORD began building what would become known as WOFFORD’S STORE which operated until 1840 when Mrs Anna Prentiss relocated here with 6 children under 5yrs old including Jesse Jr./JamesWaffeld/SarahPurdy/JohnMansfieldJr./BellaWaffeld OLDEST SON OF JAMES WAFFORD arrived Dec 4th 1840 thru Jan 1st 1889; ran store till 1925 when Samuel Coffin Caffey Jr succeeded him @ 64yrs old!!!
