The town site was chosen because it fit within the limits of Charleston and because it had a lower water table than most other areas around the region. In 1814, settlers named their town Mount Pleasant after General John Cotesworth Pinckney's plantation in Georgia (now Liberty County). In 1821, Aiken became one of nine counties formed from Union County when that county was divided into two parts following the American Civil War. At that time, Mount Pleasant consisted of just a couple hundred people and only produced corn and cotton crops; however, due to increased demand for goods brought overland by traders and travelers during Reconstruction, Aiken grew rapidly – becoming known as "the black capital of South Carolina." In 1865, after being burned by Confederate forces during the Battle of pikeman's Hill outside Charleston (later renamed battlefields Selma and Montgomery), Aiken became one of four towns in Union County to secede from South Carolina and become an independent republic under military rule called "the Transylvania Republic." After several years of turmoil with no end in sight, authorities finally arrived at a peace agreement negotiated by president Abraham Lincoln which restored all but three surviving township governments back to South Carolina control within five years. However, economic conditions continued to deteriorate in Aiken until 1892 when McKinley halted federal subsidies critical for its continued growth. This led to a sharp decline in business activity which contributed to falling jobs and home values throughout much of downtown Aiken – leading many residents to leave for better opportunities elsewhere during this difficult period. The current incarnation of downtown started developing soon afterward as businesses renovated old buildings into new structures on Market Street directly across from Clemson University's main campus (then still unincorporated). This corridor quickly became known as "AIKEN DISTRICT" due to its high concentrations of businesses including banks (JPMorgan Chase & Co.), law firms (Crawford & Hardison LLP), health care providers (St Luke’s Episcopal Hospital) and professional sports teams like NBA’s Charlotte Hornets and MLB’s Atlanta Braves – all drawn hither thanks largely to ample parking spaces available on nearby streetsides while also boasting some excellent restaurants like Hopkinton Farms Café or Pinnacle Grill & Brewery right next door! In recent years Downtown has seen significant redevelopment with 2 blocks east along Clinton Street between State Streetand MarketStreet becoming residential development with large modern homes while historic landmarks have been preserved such as Coca Cola Company Building or Masonic Temple built c1875 still standing today adjacentto Waffle House!
