Aiken, South Carolina is the home of one of the world's first optical businesses - a store called The Optical Shop. This business was started in 1892 by two men named John and Samuel Cooke. The shop was located on High Street in Aiken and it was open to the public. In 1935, the store changed its name to The Optical Company and it continued to be open to the public until 1970. From 1970 until 2005, The Optical Company operated as an online retailer. In 2005, The Optical Company decided to close its doors for good and all of their products were sold through Amazon.
Aiken, South Carolina is a city in the U.S. state of South Carolina and the county seat of Aiken County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 381,828. The city is located on the Savannah River at mile marker 129.4 according to the United States Census Bureau, making it one of two cities in Aiken County (the other being Florence) with a population over 100,000. It is also one of two cities in Aiken County with a population over 50,000 (the other being Columbia). The first white person to set foot on what would become Aiken was Captain John Ross in 1795. From there until 1814, Aiken was part of Kingsborough Parish and then Greenville District before becoming its own separate district under British rule after Charleston's fall from British control that year. The area now known as Aiken was originally all within present-day Kershaw County before it became part of Greenville District in 1814 and then became part of Aiken County when that territory was created from Kershaw and Wilkes Counties in 1836. The first courthouse for what would become Aiken was erected in 1865 by order of Governor James Ketchum following through on his promise made during his inaugural address as governor to build "a new court house" within three years. The present courthouse replaced an existing building that had been constructed about 1850 by Jno Wm Broughton for use as a jail and slave market complex near where he lived on Market Street downtown. For many years thereafter until 1938, this building functioned both as the county courthouse and also served as the temporary home for various civic organizations including school board meetings due to its close proximity to both branches of government buildings during those days prior to indoor plumbing becoming available throughout most parts of America such as hereabouts! In 1978–79 this structure underwent an extensive renovation which included expansion/modernization inside along with alterations/updates outside including installation Of An IMAX TheaterScreening Room And New restrooms! This project also included rehabilitation/restoration Of The original facade Of The Building What still stands today Is One Of Only Two Buildings In South Carolina Built With Precast Stone Construction! In 1984–85 another large project encompassing expansions/modernization inside along with alterations/updates outside resulted In The construction OF Another IMAX TheaterScreening Room Which Was Used Later As An auditorium For theatrical productions By American Playhouse Before They relocated To Atlanta GA In 2013! Also On That Project Was THE Installation OF’An All Weather Deck And Overhead irrigation System Just Outside City Limits Which Is Now Home To “Big 3” Supermarkets!: Publix Supermarket & Kroger Supermarket & Walmart Supercenter! During World War II, some optical equipment was necessary for military purposes such as night vision goggles and Binoculars. After the war ended, technology continued to develop so that more sophisticated Optical Devices could be made which include: television sets; radar; digital cameras; photographic equipment; ultra violet light generators (UVPGs); lasers; holograms; medical implants etc., making optic products available that were not possible before. However, this prosperity came at a cost to African Americans who continued to be pitted against white people in elections and housing discrimination until after World War II when race relations significantly improved under Ulysses S. Grant's administration; however many businesses closed during that time due to lack of competition from whites operating outside African American neighborhoods
