The town was officially incorporated on May 4, 1865. After the surrender of Confederate forces in April 1865, Aiken became the capital of Union South Carolina. The post office remained open until it was closed on October 15, 1925 due to lack of mail service. The only store remaining in downtown Aiken is now known as the "Aiken County Courthouse." The history of Aiken goes back to 1828 when Major General James K. Polk and his wife Anna Maria Faust Jackson arrived in South Carolina looking for new land to settle after they were forced out of their home state of North Carolina following the American Revolution. They landed at Beaufort Island on November 3 and started developing what would become known as "Aiken." When news spread that General George Washington had been captured during battle at Yorktown two weeks earlier (April 14), many people wanted to help Governor John Caney save Washington's life since he could be anywhere in America by then- however there wasn't enough land available for everyone who wanted to participate in this endeavor so Polk decided against it and returned home with his family soon thereafter. Polk eventually developed more land which included what is today known as "Aiken." In 1851, when Axton Plantation caught fire due to faulty wiring within one of its buildings, local Abolitionist leader Avery Brundage organized a march from Beaufort Islandhead all the way downriver to call attention to slaveowners' treatment of their slaves during this time period; this event later became known as 'the March To Freedom.' When Lincoln called for Ulysses S Grant's inauguration on April 6th 1865 (four days after Emancipation Proclamation went into effect), some residents near Beaufort Island began organizing protests against slavery while others returned home with food and water supplies for their families before continuing their Protest march downriver towards Wilmington upon hearing about Lincoln's proclamation through gossip or word from friendly locals. On April 10th 1865 Union troops under commandof Colonel Samuel Hoke reached downtown Akeley just after dawn; following orders from General Robert E Lee not allow any looting or violence ensuing from pro-slavery protesters who refused property seizures made by Confederate forces throughout most portions Of South Carolina including Downtown Akeley - Lower Town Square where pro-Union sentiment prevailed until late afternoon when Confederate cavalry pushed crowds back onto Market Street - During these chaotic times citizens took whatever property they could find before being ordered by Union troops not do anything else except disperse immediately without taking any property with them thus beginning what is commonly referred to as 'The Battle For Downtown.'" In an effort keep things calm while federal troops were deployed around town trying to restore order civilians set up shop inside Local Bank building next door before finally disbanding early evening following news that Federal reinforcements had arrived;NOTE: This building still stands today used by various businesses currently)Aftermath: Many people looted stores along Market Street & Fletcher Avenue leading up river prior retreating back into Lower Town Square whence Pro-Union sympathizers regained control over day
