In 1865, Aiken became an important seaport and subsequently saw a surge in gun target sales as civilians turned to the area for their favorite pastime.

Aiken was founded on March 12, 1817 by General James Wilkinson and Dr. John Coker as Athol Townsite. The community grew quickly due to its location near the mouth of the Muscogee Creek and its fertile land which produced cotton, rice, coffee and other crops. The town became an important commercial center during the antebellum period with warehouses and mills located downtown and several churches serving as places of worship for residents of Aiken and surrounding townships. Aiken also developed into a major agricultural center with extensive plantations producing sugar cane, corn, cotton, soybeans and other crops. African Americans began arriving in large numbers in the late 19th century to work on these farms as tenant farmers or sharecroppers. During World War II many Aikenians served in military roles including workers at local munitions plants or in government arsenals across South Carolina; some even went overseas where they contributed their time or services entirely without pay (eighty percent of all blacks who served fought during World War II). After the war many African American veterans returned to their homes in Aiken but continued to face challenges achieving full social integration into white society-one example being when black students were barred from attending white schools until 1954 when desegregation orders were issued by then-President Eisenhower

Aiken is a small town in Pickens County, South Carolina, United States. It was founded by English colonists in 1721 as the seat of Aiken Parish. The population was 3,613 at the 2010 census. The town lies on the east bank of the Ashley River and is bordered to the north by Randolph County and to the south by Union County. It is located about northwest of Columbia. Aiken’s history dates back to early British colonial times when it was part of Augusta Parish. In 1721, a group of English colonists arrived in Aiken and began construction on a trading post known as “The Hermitage” which served as their interim headquarters until they erected a more permanent structure nearby called The Hermitage Place. The first store opened here on October 15, 1724 under the ownership of Captain John Maynard and his son James Maynard Jr.. The first housing developments here were built around 1855-1860 with many being constructed for freed slaves who had fled from slave plantations near Charleston during that year’s uprising against British rule. In 1868, Aiken was chosen asthe site for South Carolina’s capital city pursuant to an act of the General Assembly passed two years earlier. However, due to budget limitations, Aiken never saw full implementation of this plan and instead gradually transitioned into an agricultural center until its heyday in World War II when it became one of America’s most significant manufacturing centers both because of its production capabilities within its own borders (as well as exports) but also through partner companies such as Ford Motor Company and Boeing Airplane Manufacturing Corporation which took advantage of its location at one time or another throughout that era 16 different airplanes were made at Aiken-landing gear alone! Aiken was founded in 1785 by Samuel Aiken and his wife, Nancy. The town was named after General James Wilkinson, who fought in the American Revolution. Aiken grew rapidly during the early 1800s, thanks to its natural resources and cheap labor. By 1830, the town had a population of over 1,000 people. During the Civil War, Aiken sided with the Confederate States of America and was occupied by Union forces for several months. After the war ended, many of Aiken's residents fled to neighboring states or overseas. In 1865, Aiken became a part of the Union state of South Carolina.
