The initial growth of Aiken was due to the export trade generated by the plantations on Hilton Head Island and nearby mainlandCharleston County. Cotton exports developed into an important part of local economy by 1830; however, sugar production became dominant after that decade due to increased importation of sugar from Africa and Cuba following the American Revolution. In 1860, cotton production had ceased on most of Hilton Head Island, but continued on adjacent mainland Charleston County where planters built new cotton plantations including Ashley Hall Plantation (now Ashley Estates), Summer Hill Plantation (now Summerhill), Winder Place Plantation (now White Sands Beach), Catawba Hills Plantation (now Catawba Lakes) and Pee Dee Hills Plantation (now Pee Dee Industrial Park). After African American slaves were emancipated beginning in 1865, many white men migrated to Charleston County seeking new opportunities for themselves after their emancipation; these men formed a "new black middle class" that overshadowed the earlier enslaved black elite within Caribbean slaveowning families such as those headed by James K.'s father John Beaufort Sr.. By 1870, about one-third of all residents were non-white free Blacks while only 10% were white AngloSaxons or Northern Europeans who owned land or worked on plantations

Aiken is a town in the U.S. state of South Carolina, located on the Catawba River. The population was 21,521 as of the 2010 census. Aiken was founded by white settlers in 1811 and grew rapidly during the antebellum period as a result of its strategic location on the river and its agricultural production. It became an important transportation hub during the late 19th century with routes connecting Charleston to Savannah and Mobile, Alabama. In 1923, Aiken was renamed for General Robert E. Lee after his surrender at Appomattox Court House in Virginia.
