The post-war years were tough for Aiken as manufacturing declined while agriculture continued to suffer from lack of investment and competition from those who had learned how to produce cotton using machines rather than hand labor. However, some positive changes occurred during this time including: growth in nightlife due to increasing numbers of tourists visiting downtown; emergence of downtown as an arts and entertainment district; increase in housing prices which helped spur development within the city limits; and rise in population density which has helped create more opportunities for professional people within the city limits overall since 2000). Today's economy relies heavily on service businesses such as tourism, education, health care/fertility treatments and local government services such as public Works projects or administering city ordinances
