Aiken, South Carolina is a city located in the state of South Carolina. The population was 54,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat for Aiken County and is also the location of Aiken National Military Park. Aiken is located on the Ashley River, about 25 miles (40 km) northeast of Columbia and 50 miles (80 km) southeast of Charleston. It lies at an elevation of 577 feet (−203 m). The first permanent settler in what would become Aiken County was James Armistead who arrived in 1795. He named his land "Armistead's Ferry". After James' death, his wife Phebe sold their holdings to Colonel John199 Armistead for $1,000 worth of goods which he transported overland from Georgia to Accra Parish in present-day Ghana. Colonel Armistead's son Daniel built a house on his lands and called them "Aiken" after himself and later moved it to its current location as a town site in 1819. In 1828 Samuel Fenton founded "Fentonville" about 6 miles (10 km) south of present-day Aiken on land that had been purchased by him from colonel John Armistead two years earlier. The town grew rapidly due to its strategic location as well as its easy access to transportation: arriving passengers could walk or take horse cars directly to Fentonville's wharf where they disembarked onto boats which took them back upriver to Columbia or Charleston. By 1840 Fentonville boasted a school, Methodist Church, post office, jail and several taverns/restaurants including The Gilded Cage—the first hotel west of the Appalachian Mountains! From 1850 until 1860 white settlers began moving into what would become Aiken County; however black settlement did not begin until 1865 when Denmark Vesey landed at Beaufort Harbor with some slaves aboard his ship "Empire State". Over time more African Americans immigrated to Aiken County; however most residents continued living within their own racial groupings until Stonewall Jackson's Emancipation Proclamation listed all races as citizens subject to equal treatment under law in 1863. By 1870 black residents made up only 8% of the population while whites made up 96%. However this demographic change ultimately did nothing to hinder economic development because agriculture remained one of the majorstay industries throughout much of Reconstruction periods across America due largely to plentiful natural resources such as coal, cotton and timber available close by while labor shortages were managed through importation from Europe or Africa. In 1886 Cotton Blossom Manufacturing Company was organized by General Wofford Hickson with plans for developing cotton fields throughout central South Carolina using slave labor – but this venture failed due primarily because it was opposed by white farmers who saw slavery as an inefficient wayto produce wealth while also maintaining control over their workers lives & work schedules

Lee attacked Aiken without warning and burned down the local courthouse. This event marked one of the first times that Confederate forces had targets outside of Charleston proper. After the war ended, Aiken experienced a period of growth as it became an important transportation stop for goods arriving from eastern South Carolina and Georgia. In 1922, Aiken was designated as a city by South Carolina Governor Harry Fenton based on its growing population and increasing infrastructure needs.
