Gun barrels are a long history in Aiken, South Carolina. The first gun barrels were made in the early 1800s and they served as shotguns, rifles and handguns. Many of the guns that are still used today were designed or made in Aiken by local gunsmiths. The first shotgun was designed by Major John Smeaton in 1812. It was called the “Smeaton Gun” and it was used to shoot game from a distance. The gun was named after British Major John Smeaton who designed it. The nextgun that was designed in Aiken was called the “Pea Gun”. This gun fired rounds that could be shot multiple times at once. It had a barrel about thirty-six inches long and it weighed about four hundred pounds. The Pea Gun was used by soldiers during the American Revolution. In 1827, Colonel David Levy built a rifle using cannons that he found at Fort Sumter on Long Island. The rifle became known as the “Levy Rifle” and it is still used today to shoot arrows into trees。 colonel david levey also built many shotguns during this time period including some of which are still being produced today

This action creates a loud noise as propellant gas pressure builds up in the cartridge case which then detonates when released by the firing pin

Aiken is one of the most conservative towns in South Carolina and has been known for its right-wing politics. The community was founded by white men in 1852 as "Aikenborough". The name stuck and Aiken became an established town after incorporation in 1881. The town's first mayor was Hiram Murchison and it had a schoolhouse from 1853 to 1860. After Reconstruction ended, Aiken business leaders lobbied unsuccessfully to become a county seat and they were successful when Spartanburg became an all-white county in 1898. In 1960, three African Americans served as mayors: Melvin Booker (1960-1966), Lenny Young (1968-1970) and Julius Erving III (1972-1974). In 1978, James Chaney was kidnapped and murdered by white supremacists at pointblank range while attending a peaceful antiabolition rally near Aiken High School; the murder remains unsolved to this day. According to Forbes magazine's 2017 list of "The 100 Most Powerful Women", Annette Bogan ranks number two on that list with $27 million Income & assets under management as of 2019

Aiken is a town in the U.S. state of South Carolina, located on the Ashley River about 25 miles (40 km) west of Greenville. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. Aiken is one of two towns in the Charleston metropolitan area, with a population of 11 million people. Aiken was founded by white men in 1824 as part of the Palmetto State Colony and became a slaveholding community until it emancipated its slaves in 1865. It has been called "the most African American town in America." The first settlers were white men from North Carolina who moved down the Ashley River to what is now Aiken after they heard rumors that land might be available thereabouts. They named their new settlement Palmetto because its location resembled that of an ancient palm tree found near where they lived. The town was incorporated on April 6, 1824, and rapidly grew due to its strategic location - between Greenville and Charleston - and its access to markets for goods brought into those cities by riverboats or wagon trains. Aiken's growth continued under several mayors before John Clements Post became mayor in 1886. He led the city through some very challenging times during Reconstruction; such as outlawing liquor sales throughout much of post-1865 South Carolina; but he also created many civic landmarks including Aiken Park and Post Office Square which still stand today
