Aiken, South Carolina (population: 38,839) is a city in the state of South Carolina. It is the county seat for Aiken County and is located about 25 miles east of Columbia on I-95. The population was estimated to be 43,500 in 2010. The earliest human activity in what is now Aiken County was discovered by members of the United States Geological Survey while exploring a south-central portion of the country in 1859. At that time, Aiken was part of Fort Sumter after it was captured from Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. The city of Aiken first appeared on maps as early as 1868 when a group of investors led by J.D. Greer submitted an application for incorporation with the name "Aiken" to the State Board of Commissioners. The application met with no response and was abandoned without further consideration; however, Greer later changed his mind and submitted another application for incorporation using the new name "Aiken" which received approval from the board on July 14, 1868. On December 12th, 1889, voters approved annexation by Columbia County due to pressure from Mayor Fenton Condon who saw it as an opportunity to increase tax revenue available for local services such as education and roads not subject to county taxation. On January 1st 1890 court records became public when commissioners ordered dissolution of what had been called "the incorporators' association". In 1907–08 dances were held at various locations throughout town celebrating one year since incorporation; these were cancelled because of economic conditions during that period known as “The Great Depression” which affected all aspects associated with business including dance halls and tourism in general statewide. However two years later during World War II dances resumed almost immediately at Pritchett's Ballroom following a request from Mayor Newell Gee seeking stimuliation for war relief purposes only days after Pearl Harbor had occurred making Aiken one city within three months military personnel had landed at Maui – this event also helped spur development around town leading eventually to today’s downtown core area complete with several large businesses including Sears Roebuck & Co., Macy’s Department Store (now Kohl’s), Bank OneSouthwest bank branch along I-95W just north side Walmart Supercenter off Ulysses S Grant Highway towards Interstate 95E being able to provide easy access inside/outside shopping areas both small businesses and large chain stores have been established over time along many blocks providing much needed employment opportunities not just locally but throughout surrounding counties

The first post office was established in 1824 and named for General Robert E. Lee, who fought in the American Civil War and later served as Commander-in-Chief of Confederate forces during that conflict. By 1830, Aiken had become an important commercial center due to its location near Charleston and its access to the river which facilitated shipping and trade. In 1875, Aiken became one of thirteen towns created by act of Congress within Johnston County to facilitate agricultural development within that county following a drought that year. In 1902, Governor John C. Calhoun designated Aiken as the site for Clemson University's new main campus because it offered "the most extensive fairgrounds in central South Carolina". The college was founded on land donated by Jno Antonio Hillman, who also helped create what is now Clemson University Park (located adjacent to downtown). Aiken has been through many changes over its history; some were more significant than others. For example, after World War II ended, many Japanese Americans were relocated from their homes in southern Japan to other parts of America because they were deemed combatant aliens under U.S law at that time - and many people associated with Aiken left those relocation camps too because they did not want their names attached to any such activity or memory (thus often being referred to simply as "AIKEN"). This period saw several high profile arrests or convictions related to this issue including Joe Arpaio, then Sheriff of Maricopa County AZ; Roy Wilkins Jr., NAACP National President; Hideki Tojo Prime Minister of Japan during World War II; and Edwin Meese III US Attorney General during Watergate affair etc.).
