This event is known as "TheJohnson Veto." After The Johnson Veto, many businesses closed down and many residents lost their jobs. Aiken experienced significant transformation following World War II when new industries began to emerge such as shipbuilding and aircraft manufacturing. However, these industries did not always survive due to competition from other regions in South Carolina or outside of South Carolina. During the 1970s through 1990s there were periods of economic stability but also some high levels of crime which has led to concern about future growth in the community
