The economy of Woonsocket has been based on agriculture since the early 1800s. In 1886, the first electric light bulb was installed in Woonsocket and the town began to experience rapid growth. By 1920, Woonsocket had reached a population of over 100,000 people and it remains an agricultural center today.

Woonsocket is located on the Narragansett Bay shoreline and is bordered by Fryeburg to the east, Cranston to the south, Warwick to the west, and Pawtucket to the north. The first permanent settler in what is now Woonsocket was Nicholas Brougham who arrived in 1629. He built a log cabin on which he labored for many years before moving his family to present day Woonsocket in 1638. The first Post Office was opened in 1792 and continued operating until 1836 when it became part of Providence. In 1812 John Morse moved from Northampton, Massachusetts and founded a trading post known as Morse's Point on modern-day South Kingstown beach near present-day Greenwich Village. He also sold some land that would become Woonsocket along with rights of way to others including Richard Stockton who developed Annaquat Key Peninsula which includes much of what is now downtown Woonsocket. In 1820 Robert Townsend bought about , all of modern-day Downtown Woonsocket from Morrissey & Sons for $1 million after losing an argument over ownership of land that boundaries then Newtown Square and Newport Beach). This area later became part of Warwick; however, most development took place along Main Street (now Narragansett Avenue) between Government House Square and South Kingstown beach where Townsend had originally situated his post office building (the first commercial structure erected on Rhode Island soil). It should be noted that at this time there were no streetlights or other public amenities such as parks or schools within today’s downtown core – only Townsend’s house survived into our current day! From here began what has been called “Townsend’s Wall” – a wall built around 1800 by prominent local man Samuel Deering which separatedwhat is now downtown from Annaquat Key Peninsula which included much of what is now downtown Warwick CBD (this area would eventually become Pawtucket). In 1830 Samuel Deering donated 5 acres (18 hectares) bordering Annaquat Key Peninsula for use as a school district; this donation remains one of the largest private sector donations ever made to education in RI history! The cornerstone for Towne Center School was laid on November 8th, 1830 by Rev Benjamin Fenton when Classes Firstopened its doors; under his guidance Classes Firstgraded their students into 7th through 12th grade…..Today we continue our Education journey….Thank you Mr.Deering!! In 1840 James Hickey purchased land adjacent to Towne Center School from Drury & Greenwell for $2 per acre…..This property served as home court ground while classes were being held at Towne Center School until 1959 when it reverted back to Drury & Greenwell…..Today we enjoy playing organized sports out there 🙂
