In 1763, when Rhode Island became a state, Watertown was renamed Woonsocket after John Woonskill, one of its trustees. Woonskill's brother-in-law William Griggs also founded Providence with his family in 1795. In 1812, John Quincy Adams purchased 2/3 interest in the town from Nicholas Brown for $2,000; Adams set up shop as an apothecary and began to build up a following among merchants and others interested in keeping trade alive during wartime times. In 1814 he married Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811-1896). At that time Woonsocket had a population of about 100 people; by 1840 it had grown to 350 people and by 1860 it was 1,500 people strong. A major event which occurred during these years was when court cases were brought before our very own John Quincy Adams because he needed some legal assistance with some small claims against Nonresidents who had taken up residence within our borders without proper permits! After much back and forth discussion it resulted that both parties came to an agreement whereby the claimant would be paid their rightful cost plus attorney fees however this didn't sit well with many residents as they saw this as another example of how powerful men could take advantage of those less able to protect themselves! Despite this issue many people continued to support President James Kents cabinet until his impeachment proceedings began later that year! Adams eventual removal from office led to much celebration amongst locals as they finally had someone they could look up to in comparison! Unfortunately for them this lasted only until shortly before his execution which caused quite a stir throughout the community! As soon as news reached him about what happened he quickly ordered all supplies seized so no one could mourn too long (or maybe too loudly?). Regardless though most everyone quickly forgot all about it...except for those few who clearly still remember every touch and sound from that fateful day 50 years ago!
