Woonsocket is a town in Rhode Island, located on the island of Woonsocket. The population was 8,548 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Providence-Fallsburg, RI-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Town of Woonsocket was chartered on November 1, 1692 by James Iredale and others as a small fishing village near present day Portsmouth. The first settler in what would become Woonsocket was John Cooke who arrived in 1693 from England with his family. The original boundaries of the town were 10 miles along the river to its mouth on Narragansett Bay then 5 miles upriver to its current location including present day Portsmouth. After several years of development there were only 54 people living in Woonsocket when it incorporated as a town on February 14th 1825 under the name "Providence". In 1838 Jeremiah Sargent donated land east of Pearl Street for Woonsocket's first high school which still stands today and became known as Sargent High School. On July 4th 1847, during an election campaign for mayor Isaac Chandler defeated incumbent John Dyer with 93% of the vote becoming Mayor for Life! In 1861 construction began on what would be called "the old Courthouse" which later served as City Hall until 1960 when it burned down and was replaced by new facilities (now known as Park Plaza). In 1865–1867 two brothers named George Brown opened a store in what is now downtown Woonsocket that became one of the most successful businesses on Rhode Island’s west coast due to its innovations such as air conditioning and frozen food products. With this success came competition from other stores growth that eventually led to Harry Jaffee’s purchase of Brown’s Store in 1971 which grew into one of Rhode Island’s largest grocery stores serving ZIP code 02810 with over 6 million square feet across four floors! On December 15th 1893 Gouverneur Morris accompanied Abraham Lincoln while he visited Newport during his Ulysses S Grant presidency giving him an opportunity to view some local plantations before returning home via steamboat! After coming into being as an unincorporated community within Providence Township (later divided between Fall River Township and Warwick Township) on January 1st 1912, Woonsocket again went through annexation by Providence Township following a referendum held that same year – making it part of Providence-Fallsburg, RI-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area
