Woonsocket's history dates back to 1795 when it was an agricultural community on the banks of the Pawtucket River. The town grew rapidly during World War II as the production of radios and other electronic equipment increased in the area. In 1959, Woonsocket became home to America's first optical fiber optic cable television system. In 1775, during the American Revolution, General John Brown's rebels attacked a British military detachment near Woonsocket killing almost all of the soldiers and taking much spoil as they went. This event led to increased tension between America's Patriots and their Loyalist opponents who styled themselves "the Crown's Enemies." In 1881, when Rhode Island became a state, it assigned land to each municipality on an equal basis with no towns having more than fifty-five residents per square mile (19 km2). As a result of this change in government policy, some residents of smaller villages such as Woonsocket began seceding from their larger neighborings while others chose to remain within their respective municipalities. This situation continued until 1915 when Rhode Island adopted its present form of government under which towns have a mayor-council system with one vote for each member plus two vetoes if necessary. Today, Woonsocket remains one of the most vibrant communities in Rhode Island due to its strong economy and wide variety of cultural experiences available throughout its six wards: Pawtucket Valley (northwest corner), Westerly (southwest corner), Narragansett Bay (southeast corner), Cranston/Providence (central sector), Warwick/West Warwick (northern sector) and South Kingstown/East Kingstown (eastern sector). The plethora of cultural attractions has helped contribute to its nickname "The Cultural Capital of RI." In addition to its vast array of cultural attractions there are also several parks located within walking distance including Westchester County Fairgrounds(Riverside section) which features horse racing-, carnival games-and rides-as well as great food options; Exeter Park (), featuring tennis courts-, playgrounds-, riverside walks-and Fells Point Harbor buoyarium (); Aquarium at Narragansett Bay (); Phillips Academy School District () - one stop for students attending multiple schools located nearby; primarily composed mostly suburban neighborhoods but scattered pockets scattered around downtown areas contain medium sized shopping malls; also included are several thousand acres (~10 km²) zoned Agricultural that produce crops such as cornbeans,, soybeans,, peas,, potatoes,-on top lies Killington Hill State Park () offering views over Newport Beach
